    3. Do it the old fashioned way of cutlists, then scan 16mm to 2k Cineon, assemble, grade and print to 35mm.

This is usually referred to as Digital Intermediate.

Michael, HVR-1500 is DSR-1500 with HDV playback. HVR-M25 is more like DSR-25 with HDV playback.

  • Post in native DVCPRO-HD – it is easy. Use double system – shooting is expensive, post is cheap. Record sound to hard disk or solid state recorder – DAT is dead. FCP reads timecode from BWF (Broadcast WAVE) files just fine. Always clap sticks no matter digital slate or “analog”.

George Washington was probably the first feature cut in FCP. Back in 1999. The editor is on this board so he’ll correct if I’m wrong. Read CinemaTools manual and you’ll be fine. It is somewhat different from Avid workflow but you can do cut, pull and change lists. Also there is a forum at 2-pop dedicated to film in FCP.

  • Which is the cheapest one with TC? Fostex FR2?

Come on. AJA or Decklink ain’t frickin’ Targa Cine. These gadgets output good enough signal for DigiBeta to sync on incoming SDI.

[cls105] “#1 i like putting all my selects on a timeline. then i like to put that timeline in the viewer (in avid you can toggle source/record on timeline, now when i cut from sequence in viewer into my actual edit and then i match frame later on it just takes me to the selects sequence (not the original master clip) why can it only match frame one level??”

I’d like to have a choice between matching frame to the selects sequence and the master clip but my system matches frame to the master clip. I guess you’re not cutting clips from the selects sequence but the parts of the sequence itself – nested. To cut clips from the sequence in Viewer hold Command while hitting F10 or F9. Try Command-F11 and join me in bitching to Apple it doesn’t work.

[cls105] “#2 motion effects are annoying, seems like my options are.. applying it to the whole master clip which isnt great if i want to use parts of that clip somewhere else…”

You mean time effects. Remove them in the master clip before using it in the different place. It won’t affect existing instances.

[cls105] “#3 freeze frames… why cant i match frame to the original master clip that i freeze framed?”

Because frozen frame is a separate media file. Theoretically FCP can keep track of the stills it created from video clips. File a feature request and if there are enough people asking for this feature we might get it. Like in FCP 8.

[cls105] “#4 dissolves.. if i have 3 clips back to back and the middle one has dissolves on both sides, i cant replace that shot with another one unless if i remove the dissolves.”

If there is enough footage in the new clip it works, dissolves or not. If it doesn’t on your system send detailed feedback to Apple. This is bug, not a feature.

[tom meegan] “Ability to add markers while capturing.”

You are too modest. I’d do it like this:

    Dear Apple,

Please take a look at the Log&Capture tool you ship with FCP. It desperately needs an overhaul.

First of all get rid of that pseudo-overlay that pops up when you
capture. It’s a shame. Simply make data entry fields non-editable
like the Name field during capture. They still must be “live” though
    – during batch capture Current, Duration, In, Out et al must reflect
the parameters of the clip being captured. During Capture Now In
should reflect the starting TC and Duration should be calculated on
    the fly.

Add the equivalent of CHAR ON switch found on professional VTR’s to
the Log And Capture window. Overlay incoming video with current TC,
Cueing source material, Capturing… text in BIG BOLD TYPE so it’s
clearly visible when you glance at the screen from across the room.
That’s where an editor or assistant is often happen to be during long
batches. Make “time data” and “time data & status” selectable. Make
“On video”, “On black” and “Separate Window” options.

Allow Markers during capture. This must’ve been there from the
    beginning.
Enable Marker shortcuts during logging. Next Marker, Previous Marker,
Edit Marker, Delete Marker must work in Log and Capture just like in
    the Viewer or Canvas.

Enable editing from Log and Capture to the Timeline. F9, F10 should
insert, overwrite into the sequence current clip in the L&C window as
an offline clip. With modifier (Option?) they should perform edit and
    start capturing media.

Add Eject command. Both button and ejecting after all clips on a tape
    are captured.

  • As far as I remember it simply creates new EDL that references master tape, not source tapes. It doesn’t changes event names, just TC and Reel.
