16mm and FCP
Posted by Liam Stephens on February 4, 2007 at 4:54 amHi All
I was just wondering if anyone has edited a film on 16mm using FCP. Basically I am looking for help to weigh up whether i should use my native tongue (FCP) or AVID to edit the film. I would want to edit in 24fps. i was hoping there was a resource or documentation that could show the exact workflow/pipeline that would provide the best results.
cheers

February 4, 2007 at 5:11 amI have…but it was telecined to HD (D5) and onlined on D5, and distributed on DVD.
What will be your workflow? Negative cut? Tape? But yes, it works for film. A few major motion pictures have used it.
Look in the small Cinema Tools manual. It will explain a lot.

Yeah its 16mm in to 16mm out. I think the work flow would be 16mm>digibeta>FCP>assemble list>16mm. They want to convert the finished cut to 35mm which i think the lab will do. I want to be able to do the same things i would do in an avid ie..make a list of shots to be scanned for VFX and do a final assemble list of the finished cut. I love FCP but havent heard anything from people who actually use cinema tools. I’ll try do some more research, next stop cinema tools manual! Thx! if there are any users who have used it please do tell your stories.

February 4, 2007 at 9:42 amWe have just finished editing a 35 full length movie on FCP. .It was 24p and we had dv tapes. Worked quite smooth.. Filmtools made it work. (but I am in the land of PAL and we edited in 24@25.. )

February 4, 2007 at 7:16 pmGeorge Washington was probably the first feature cut in FCP. Back in 1999. The editor is on this board so he’ll correct if I’m wrong. Read CinemaTools manual and you’ll be fine. It is somewhat different from Avid workflow but you can do cut, pull and change lists. Also there is a forum at 2-pop dedicated to film in FCP.

February 4, 2007 at 7:33 pmI’m that editor, and thanks for the mention.
We were the first feature shot on film and finished on film using FCP 1 and Film Logic (now Cinema Tools). We actually started on Premiere, but that wasn’t working for us so we jumped to FCP. We were a 35mm film, but the process works for 16 also.
For anyone wanting info beyond the manual, try to find Sean Cullen and Walter Murch talking to user groups (often on DVD from LAFCPUG) — such as October 2005 about Jarhead https://www.lafcpug.org/store.html#anchor812702 and Feb 25 2004 about Cold Mountain (if that DVD is still out there).
Also, though it is dated, Behind the Seen gives some good technical info (though it wrongly does not mention George Washington as the first FCP feature film).

February 4, 2007 at 10:15 pmsorry for the mixup.. filmtools.. cinematools.. same thing. Remember that Decklink does not work with 24@25.. you have to use a dv player. (just check the decklink forum to see what I am talking about). And don’t upgrade in the middle of a project. hehe.

February 5, 2007 at 11:55 amhey, Liam.
where will you be working in Aust?
i’m based in Sydney, and am interested in interviewing people about their workflow on low-budget (or high budget!) film, especially with FCP.
i’ve cut a couple of features on FCP here, one was “Three Dollars” which was a 35mm 24fps project,
so i’ve got a perspective on the process if you care to catch up.
some of it is written up here:
https://com1.runboard.com/bsydneyfinalcutpro.f3.t194430|offset=10but Cinema tools can easily do the things you need it to.
cheers,
& good luck with the project,

February 5, 2007 at 3:33 pmHey Nick
Thx for a great resource, good to see someone putting back into the community. Basically the film wont be starting untill mid year. I cant say too much at this point other than it will be in QLD and have a reputable cast/crew. I currently reside in LA, so i’ll be coming home for the a couple months to do it. Trying to get a jump on the technical aspects now. I know i could easily do it in AVID but i WANT to do it in FCP. I would be pleased to discuss the projects workflow with you, this will be a medium to high budget film so there is a bit of pressure to get this right first time. Going to try and do a test within the next couple months and iron out my workflow/technical issues. If you would like to contact me offlist at liamfx@gmail.com would be good to chat with other like minded folk.
cheers
