Been there done that…bad firewire cable was my problem with your symptoms.

Turn ON audio multiplexing in the Adobe Media encoder to Multiplexing for DVD or better yet, choose a Mpeg2 Preset, not a Mpeg2-DVD preset and audio will be muxed with video.

Exporting as Microsoft DV AVI is actually using the Main Concept DV codec which is pretty good, but the return trip from AE will use the Microsft DV codec which is fine for one generation.

Right click on the clip in the timeline and choose Speed/Duration and change the duration.

Settings wont change render times much…have patience.

To freeze a clip, position the CTI at the frame you want to freeze and export a still image (File>Export>Frame). Then right click on the still in the Project window and choose Insert. This will insert a 5 second freeze at the CTI. Adjust as needed.
To play 2 clips side by side, put one on V1 and the other on V2. Select onee clip and click on the word Motion in the Effects Controls palette and resize and reposition the clip in the Program window. Repeat for the other clip.

If your editing mode in Pro is DV, any video format on the timeline (other than DV) will not play smoothly without rendering preview files (Enter).

Pro can edit and export .wmv files to most any format just fine, considering the files are highly compressed to begin with.

You can export from Premiere, but you will need to create a custom preset and dig into the advanced settings of the Adobe Media Encoder to access Windows Media Video 9 Screen codec. 350 Kbps for 640 x 480 should work fine when viewed in Windows Media Player at 100%.

Pro should import Quicktime .DV files just fine.
