Audio Studio 10 doesn’t appear to have the noise reduction plugin that you can get for the Pro version so I’d stick with Audacity. Do all your work in Audio Studio first, save it as a WAV file and then import that into Audacity for noise reduction.

Movie Studio should have volume envelopes. Look in the online help file to confirm this. If it does, all you need to do is apply a very small envelope at the click point to drastically reduce or eliminate it.

Gilles, what you’ll gain is audio levels that are closer to what you heard in Vegas. Compared to MPEG-2 files, AC-3 render times aren’t that long, even for a 2 hr. program, so go ahead and do it.

Gilles, see if the following “adjustment” will help to even things out.

Encode set to AC3;
Click on custom tab;
On the first tab set Dialog normalization to “-31”;
On the last tab marked Preprocessing;
Set the Line Mode & RF mode profiles to “None”;
Now save this as a preset.

Grazie, no apologies necessary. Your “sideways” views have a habit of making the rest of ask about workflow questions and that’s always a good thing.
My home machine is still XP so I can’t try SF 11 until I get into work and try it there. I have an out of town shoot first thing today so I won;t be able to try it and post screen shots until later this afternoon but I promise that I will (unless someone beats me to it) as you have me curious about the differences.

Grazie, in spite of repeated requests, Vegas still can’t read an AC-3 file. The latest version of Sound Forge can but not Vegas.
You raise an interesting question about AC-3 levels and AGC. I wish I had the answer but, to be honest, I have no clue 🙂
I stand to be corrected but I’m pretty sure Gilles doesn’t use the AGC version of the AC-3 encoder.
Ever since I discovered that DVDA won’t do a 5.1 preview, I gave up on it’s abilities to give me any kind of accurate audio preview 🙁

Media FX reads the timecode that is embedded in the original video event whereas Video Event FX will always start at 00:00:00:00

Steve is right. I don’t trust the preview in DVDA for anything other than showing me that I have picture and sound. If it looks and sounds good in SVP, then it is.

Right click in the timecode window above the video track, scroll down to Time Format – Set Time at Cursor and set it to whatever time you want.
Now apply the Timecode FX to the track and your timecodes will match.
You’ll have to choose which one (drop, non drop, etc.) to use.
