I create my video in SVP, adjust the levels correctly, render to mpg.
I then import the video into DVDA for authoring.

When I preview the video in SVP, my audio is much louder than when previewed in DVDA.

    Is this normal?

I dont think its anything to worry about. Where the concern should
be, is if it does not sound right after burning and playing it from
    the DVD.

What Format of AC3 did you use?

Steve is right. I don’t trust the preview in DVDA for anything other than showing me that I have picture and sound. If it looks and sounds good in SVP, then it is.

If it looks and sounds good in SVP, then it is
    Precisely on point Mike.

O..K.. guys…. How about the AC3 AGC (Auto Gain Control?) that is part of the options in the AC3 encode? Now THAT wouldn’t appear in Vegas? Can Vegas read AC3? In any event, the AC3 is after the rendering process and ONLY shows, is heard, in DVDA. And that’s why I raised this. Could our Chum be “hearing” this Gain?

What is Heard in Vegas Stays in Vegas . . . But does the AGC affect the AC3?

    Cheers

    Grazie

Grazie, in spite of repeated requests, Vegas still can’t read an AC-3 file. The latest version of Sound Forge can but not Vegas.
You raise an interesting question about AC-3 levels and AGC. I wish I had the answer but, to be honest, I have no clue 🙂
I stand to be corrected but I’m pretty sure Gilles doesn’t use the AGC version of the AC-3 encoder.
Ever since I discovered that DVDA won’t do a 5.1 preview, I gave up on it’s abilities to give me any kind of accurate audio preview 🙁

Mike, thank you for taking the trouble to respond to my “concerns” over exactly what our Chum MIGHT have done. And yes, my reason for the AC3 question into Vegas would/maybe have demonstrated that LOUDNESS for us, and yes, that is STILL not an option in VP.

My over-arching view on this is that this COULD have been another variable introduced. Would our Chum have done it? I haven’t the slightest idea! But asking the question has again raised this as a potential issue for “others” to gain, consider an understanding that not always what comes OUT of Vegas is not necessarily what has been apprehended WITHIN Vegas.

It would be interesting to have SF to “read” the AC3 portion just to hear IF there was a difference in loudness.

Again, Mike, thanks for your response. Sometimes I feel I am punching in the dark when I come up with these sideways views.

Grazie, no apologies necessary. Your “sideways” views have a habit of making the rest of ask about workflow questions and that’s always a good thing.
My home machine is still XP so I can’t try SF 11 until I get into work and try it there. I have an out of town shoot first thing today so I won;t be able to try it and post screen shots until later this afternoon but I promise that I will (unless someone beats me to it) as you have me curious about the differences.

    Thanks guys.
I just checked and I am using the AC3 Dolby Digital PRO (not Studio).
This way I am able to drop the bitrate to 128 to conserve space.

In this template “dialog normalization’ is set to -27db

Any of the above an issue?

    Gilles
