Timecode start at a specific time?
Posted by Alvin Down on January 29, 2014 at 3:34 amHello, I’m trying to make a realistic surveillance camera effect, but when I add the timecode, it always starts at 0. Is there any way that I could make it start at a specific time, so it’s like the time in the video?
thanks

January 29, 2014 at 4:14 amThe Sony Timecode effect time depends on what it is placed on.
Event – you get the event time code. Starts at 0
Media – the media timecode. if media does not have a timecode then starts at zero.
Track – you get project time.If you want a custom time then you can create a solid color media event, set the color to transparent, add the timecode effect to the event. Put this even on a track above your video. Right click the media properties and change the media timecode to the value you want. It will count up from there.

January 29, 2014 at 5:37 amthank you for replying,
So I tried what you suggested, and I’m still having troubles.
Here’s what I did:I added a new track above my video, then I right clicked, and clicked “Insert Generated Media”.
I chose Sony Solid Color, and clicked OK. I then extended the solid color to fit my whole video.
Then I changed the color to a transparent color, then my video was visible again from being white.
I right clicked the Solid Color, then chose Sony Timecode and pressed OK. The timecode effect then appeared on the bottom right of my video.
I right clicked the Solid Color again then went onto Properties. I clicked on the media tab and chose “Use custom timecode”. I changed it from “Time & Frames” to “Time”.
I then set the time Custom Timecode to “12:35:00.000”. Then i pressed OK.When i played the video, the timecode didn’t change, and did not start at 12:35:00.000.
Is there anything I’m missing?
thanks

January 29, 2014 at 7:18 amSorry, my bad in my instructions. When you add the effect you must add it as a MediaFx effect so that your entered media timecode will be used.
Also when you add a generated media event it will start out a certain length. Extending the event on the timeline will not extend the length of the generated media. You need that so the timecode keeps increasing the whole length. Depending on option it may loop or just show the last frame.
You want the generated event to be the length of the event on the timeline so click the match event length button in the upper right of the effects pane window.
If you do not have any edits on the media you can just put a MediaFx on your media and enter a custom timecode for the media.

That does add a timecode effect to all media. You still have to enter a custom timecode for each media and if you have edits the timecode will not move continuous. The edits will cause jumps in time.

January 29, 2014 at 7:40 amRight click in the timecode window above the video track, scroll down to Time Format – Set Time at Cursor and set it to whatever time you want.
Now apply the Timecode FX to the track and your timecodes will match.
You’ll have to choose which one (drop, non drop, etc.) to use. -

January 29, 2014 at 8:41 amOh okay, thank you very much, Norman Black, it works.
Is there a reason why MediaFx is different than VideoEventFx?, like what’s the difference?
thanks

Media FX reads the timecode that is embedded in the original video event whereas Video Event FX will always start at 00:00:00:00
