This is very easy to do with particle plugins. You could either use the ones included with AE or third-party ones.

Wondertouch’s ParticleIllusion has some absolutely gorgeous snow presets in their library. (They’ve got THOUSANDS of presets available for FREE)

I’m sure you could create something cool with Trapcode’s Particular as well (and this one’s 3d!)

Check out Dan Ebberts’ website on Expressions and learn lots of stuff!
In there somewhere, no doubt, is something that would help you with this. I know there are expressions that you can use to determine where layers land in 3d space, based on other layers, I just don’t know expressions very well.

Oooh, I just thought of the Monster Dots tutorial, this might help you and give you some new ideas too!

It should have come with inbuilt help files which would help some.
There are also some tutorials here on the COW that tell you, right from the start, some cool stuff to do.

However, to actually get good without harming yourself you should get the Total Training DVDs by Brian Maffit. Totally worth every penny spent. (Not that the government cares.)

This thread Talks about camera flashes. But if you’re asking for just the burnt out look, use levels.

There was a tutorial for this using Photoshop and After Effects, and now I can’t find it. I think it was in pdf form.

Why not use Polar Coordinates? Animate a bit of fractal noise scaled big time in one direction and then Polar Coordinates it! Put a circular mask in the center to make it more tunnely.

    Would that do it?

  • There are probably a few ways to do this. Expressions are not my strong point and I’m not on my workstation at the moment so I can’t test my idea out, but I think I’ve got one.

If you pickwhip your pedal’s rotation to the cog’s rotation and add *-1 to it. Then your pedal should be rotating exactly opposite what the cog is. Giving the illusion of staying upright.

Hopefully someone wiser than me will pipe up soon.

  • I don’t think I’m fully understanding your question.

Are you saying you want the light and colours of your background layer to affect your smaller, foreground layer AND for stuff on your foreground layer to affect the background/tunnel thing?
