converting pics to tiff (or png) should speed things up, jpegs are highly compressed and require a lot more effort.

Question to you tablet users, do you use only a tablet, no mouse, or a combo of the 2.
The losing the pen is a real issue with me. For some reason I buy a dozen pens and within a couple weeks they are all gone. And I don’t even need to leave the room.

That is just a codec, what are you looking to go to, SD, 720p or 1080i or p?If up-converting you need to set the correct cropping if you source material is 4:3, if it is anamophic 16:9 it is an easier path.

I personally do not render first. While exporting would be faster, I never feel that rendering/exporting is faster than exporting unrendered timelines.
I also send a lot of stuff straight to Compressor from within FCP. So I eliminate rendering and exporting. For some things I think this is just as fast when the whole process is timed out, and I can get better quality for some things.
But in the end you should do a test and time it. To me this is not a right or wrong way of doing so but a workflow strategy. My method words for the why I work.

And what would that be. 1hr? 2? 3? 30 days? -
If you are using FCP 7 (maybe FCP 6 also, my memory is shot) you need to look for Log and Transfer and not import P2.

for me, the time it takes me to find the pen negates any speed I might pick up using it. 🙂

While that would work, that is a pretty expensive way to do it. My thinking is that a person with FCP most likely would own a Ki Pro.

Unless you are working with a ton of footage it is normally a step that most projects don’t need.
