This is a straight forward process IF you do it the right way with the right gear.
Have you loaded the Canon Software?
Then you do not hook the camera up to the computer, you get a card reader, you transfer everything in the DCIM Folder (including that folder) into a new folder on the HD, you put every card into a different folder. So you have YOUR FOLDER/DCIM/100CANON/files .mov and .THM.
In L&T you go to the DCIM folder and everything should be there.
It is a good idea to make your folder a descriptive name since this will be used by FCP as the REEL name.

why do you need to use graphic files. Have you tried just bringing in the srt file from the Subtitling company?

I would hope that the camera would never change the shuttle speed. For video that is off limits. As stated above anything other than double the frame rate produces an effect to the video, so unless you want a look it need to be locked down.
This is why I variable ND filter is a must for video work when you have no control over the lighting.
THe only time I would use auto is if I would just shooting fun stuff.

one thing I would consider is waiting on the 50mm until you can get the 1.4. you are duplicating the zoom lens with only a 1-1/3 stop difference. The focusing ring on the 1.4 will be much better in manual also.
Also also of the big guns are recommending Transcend 6x cards. Believe they are cheaper.
But looks like a solid foundation.

If you like the look of progressive shoot prog and keep it that way throughout the entire process. Ever DVD can interlace the footage for CRT tvs.
You can always go from prog to interlaced but you cannot go from interlace to prog without losing quality.

Most hollywood DVDs are DVD-9s Dual Layer disc, which hold 8.5GB. YOu can easily get 4 hours of material on a disc.
But they do have much higher end encoders, plus they are encoding perfect source material. Last but not least they have expert compressionist.
All that said I have authored many full featured DVDs using DVDSP and compressor.

Every plug in handles it there own way. I know there are several that lock you to a computers MAC address so you can only load it on one system.

Magic Bullet Frames does a good job with this. And you are not just de-interlacing you are changing the frame-rate which is also something that MB Frames does well.
You can test just using Compressor and turning on Frame Control.
Either way to do a good job you it will require a lot of time.

Chances are the conversion is not going to be great. Unless you are viewing the PAL videos on a PAL TV you are flying blind. Unless you know these encodes are good you should not be using them. If they are good and you want to use them just author PAL DVDs, you cannot nor should you mix standards.
