That’s for changing the representative frame in the Bin. It doesn’t affect the clip frame shown in the timeline when you turn clipframes on. That’s entirely dependent on the head frame of the segment in your timeline.
If you capture a ten minute tape as one chunck and your bin displays the frame at the 1 minute marker, but you cut in a piece from the 7 minute marker you don’t want the 1 minute frame shown in your sequence. You want the frame from minute 7, because that’s what’s actually in your sequence.
Otherwise you’re absolutely right–you can change the frames shown in your bin in frame mode, and you can mark In and Out on them too.

You can remove the buttons across the top under your Timeline settings (deselect Show Toolbar).
If you want to make your tracks bigger, select them all and hit Ctrl+L (PC). On a Mac it may be Cmd+L or Option+L (I’m not up on my Mac shortcuts).
To get rid of the F track at the bottom go to your Timeline Fast Menu, Show Track, and unclick Film. That will get rid of that.
Not sure what the EC1 track is, but you can probably turn it off under the timeline Fast Menu–>Show Track as well.
All the extra buttons on the bottom are standard now. Did you upgrade your software, or were you using really old user settings before? I don’t know of a way to get rid of them–they’re there all the time. The Yellow dot is your timeline quality (Yellow is Draft, click it to cycle your preview quality), the Down and Up arrows are Step In and Step Out of your effects, and double circles is your Focus button, the miniature Source/Record monitors next to it toggles whether you’re viewing your source or record monitor in the timeline, Untitled is where you save your timeline settings, and the options to the right are your Source/Record, Trim, Effects, and Color Correction modes.
Have you tried bringing your settings from your old system over to see if they function right? That way you won’t have to rebuild them (and it may retain the look of your timeline).

Windows XP 32-bit will only recognize 4GB of RAM (although it says it recognizes only a little over 3GB).
You utilize more RAM you need a 64-bit OS, like Vista Business 64-bit (which is Avid approved).
To get your system to recognize more than 2GB of RAM you have to do use the 3GB/switch which is in your Avid program folder. Check this file path:
C:\Program Files\Avid\Utilities\3GB

You can’t change them. It’s the head frame for every segment that’s shown, and if that segment has a dissolve or other transition it will show that.
You can always put a Frame track into your sequence (look under the Fast Menu of your timeline), which will show representative frames of your media–the more you’re zoomed in the more you see.

The most current Media Composer is version 3.x, and it’s $2,495 US.
You have version 2.8, so anybody buying will be getting an older version, and the upgrade to 3.x is $295 (download only–no third party apps), or $495 to upgrade with all the newest 3rd party apps.
Take into consideration a license transfer fee if this software has been registered with Avid–that’s about another $100.
So figure $2,500 – $500 upgrade – $100 license transfer = $1,900. I’d try for about $1,400 – $1,600. Post it here:

Also, this isn’t the academic version, is it? If so, sell it for $150-$200 (academic version is only $295 new).

Xpress Pro had limited resolutions. Since it was introduced in MC 2.7, it would have been introduced in 5.7 in Xpress Pro, if it’s an option at all.

You can try the Quadro fx3450, which is what I run. Make sure you get one with at least 256MB of memory on it. They’re on ebay now for about $150-$200. That would give you a midrange card from the certified list.
Otherwise your system looks good. Right OS, good processor speed, RAM. Just have to get the graphics card right and you should be good to go! Avid’s are notoriously picky about their hardware, and the hardware Avid certifies is rarely cheap. I hope the mod works for your card.
