Yep! If you’re only working in SD, you can go with the MojoSDI. If you have the Firewire board in your deck you can skip the Mojo and go straight into your system.
If you need HD as well, go with the MojoDX or NitrisDX. I suggest the NitrisDX.

Through the Mojo no. Through your computer–yes.
On your system you should have an RS232 port–it’s an old COM port. Your deck should have a 422 port. These two ports don’t talk directly to each other, so you’ll need an RS232-to-422 adapter like the Addenda Rosetta Stone:

Hook a cable from your 232 port on your computer to the convertor, and the other end of the converter to your Beta, then set up your Deck Configurations in Avid and you should be good to go.

Yep. The MojoSDI, MojoDX, and NitrisDX are I/O boxes. They’ll take your stuff in and spit it back out.
MojoSDI has SDI, component, s-video, and composite outputs. I can’t remember all the audio outputs, but I believe it has both digital and analogue (unbalanced).
The MojoDX is all digitial–SD and HD SDI in/out, but no component, s-video, composite, etc… No analogue audio outs either, except a left and right for monitoring.
The NitrisDX has everything–SD/HD SDI, all analogue and digital video/audio inputs. Very nice piece of equipment, but it comes with a price tag–about $12-$14K list price, I think.

Avid software only works with Avid hardware.
Your choices are:
MojoSDI, MojoDX, or NitrisDX. The MojoDX and NitrisDX only work with Media Composer 3.x. There’s also the old analogue Mojo, but Avid doesn’t sell it anymore.
If you’re only doing standard def, go with the MojoSDI.

Animatte isn’t available in Xpress Pro. If you’re using Xpress Pro, it’s best to go to After Effects or Boris for masking.

How long is the show, and how often will it run? In the US, I think if a show is over a certain length and isn’t a one-time run (like a newscast or something), it has to have closed captioning. I don’t know if it’s different for DVDs, but for broadcast there is a law requiring it for longer format shows. Even that might have changed, though.

Most likely, yes. Can you get any more details for us? What version they’re using, what type of media (P2, XDCam, SD, resolution, 720, 1080?), and what version of Avid you’ll be running?

Open your Title Tool (Tools–>Title Tool), then in the far right hand side of your title tool bar click the C. When it’s highlighted, select your text tool and start typing. The title tool will automatically go to a new page when necessary. Format your text size and color and all then save it to your bin. Cut into your sequence and retime using keyframes if necessary.

The new timecode effect and the subcap are the only two new ones that I can think of. If you’re giving them media too, just render all the effects and they’ll be online until they do something to unrender them. At least they can get a look at what you’re going for.
If you do need to use a timecode effect, there is another one but it’s not nearly as nice as the new one and it’s not realtime. I think it’s under the Illusion category or something (not at an Avid right now).

PS. Nice review on your blog of MC 3.x. Very well done, and glad to see you’re liking the software. Now if they would just fix their effects handling and compositing…

No, you shouldn’t.
However, any plugins or effects you use that aren’t on the other system won’t show up. The effect icon will be there, but the effect won’t.
To be safe, give them the bins and not the whole project. They should make a new project by the same name as your and just drop the bins into that.
