If we are going to produce a show and have it on television or dvd do we need to have closed captioning installed on it. Is this a law that we have to have it or is it just a option?

How long is the show, and how often will it run? In the US, I think if a show is over a certain length and isn’t a one-time run (like a newscast or something), it has to have closed captioning. I don’t know if it’s different for DVDs, but for broadcast there is a law requiring it for longer format shows. Even that might have changed, though.

The requirements for closed captioning will be defined by the distribution company or network you are creating the program for. Chances are it is part of the deliverables. The exact requirements and who pays for what should be defined by the delivery specifications and the contract.

It’s an option.
I think the law actually reads all shows have to go through Grinner Hester LLC for finalizing.
