“This software is unregistered”
Hello, I have a media composer educational version. I guess I must have clicked “dont register on the internet now” the first time i opened Avid, because now it says This software is unregistered” as Avid is starting up, and then Avid quits.
I have registered the software on the net later, but I did not get any file that I can update the Avid with.
Anyone who have got a suggestion on what to do..?

Registration shouldn’t affect whether or not Avid runs. Did it ever run, or is this the first time you tried to launch it? Also, what are your system specs and what version of Avid is this? CPU, graphics card, drivers, OS version (be exact–is it XP Home, XP Pro, Vista Home, Vista Business, 32 or 64-bit, etc…).

I think I opened Avid a couple of times before this happened. Its been a while since I installed, it, so I can not really remember.
The spsifications I could find was:
Windows XP professional – service pack 3
intel(R)core(TM)2 Duo CPU
E8400 @ 3,00 GHz
3.00 GHz, 3,25 RAMI don’t know what graphics card there is.
It is a Avid Media Composer, educational version, 3.0, I think..
The only thing I can remember doing before I could not open Avid, was setting the ram-thing to 2,7GB, and upgrading Windows Media Player to version 10…
At the very bottom, while starting up, it says “initializing ACPL effects” If that can be of any help..

This typically means a problem with your graphics card. Right click on My Computer, go to Properties, select the Hardware tab, then click the Device Manager. Check under Display Adapters to see what card is listed and post back here. I’m guessing you have either an ATI card, or an unsupported nVidia card (the 8800, maybe).

That would be the problem. You really need a Quadro card, preferably the Quadro fx1700 or higher.
You may be able to soft-mod your card with a program called RivaTuner. I’ve never personally tried this, but if you want more details on it (a lot of people have had success with the 8800 card), read here:

OK, so I’ll probably need to buy a new card..? Any suggestions on something that is not to expensive, if I can not make this other thing work..?

You can try the Quadro fx3450, which is what I run. Make sure you get one with at least 256MB of memory on it. They’re on ebay now for about $150-$200. That would give you a midrange card from the certified list.
Otherwise your system looks good. Right OS, good processor speed, RAM. Just have to get the graphics card right and you should be good to go! Avid’s are notoriously picky about their hardware, and the hardware Avid certifies is rarely cheap. I hope the mod works for your card.
