What is the reason not to use 192? Dolby sounds very ordinary at low data rates so I would advise using mpeg VBR audio if you want a small file that sounds Ok.

Dolby E is a pure data stream wrapped in a PCM file. FCP can be set for stereo or dual mono as long as the levels are unity and hard panned Left/Right. If you make sure FCP is not altering the signal in any way that is ideal. Do not panic if the levels show as clipping into the red. Levels must be set to zero.

Beware of monitoring as it is a full level data stream so it will be just noise into your speakers.

[Will Snow] “How on earth was it allowed to get like that…”

A combination of technical limitations and lazy engineering. Whoever was the bright spark who decided to shift the NTSC frame rate from 60hz to 59.94 should be immortalised as creating the most grief in both the 20th & 21st centuries.

By pure luck I was born in a PAL country so we have far fewer technical conundrums and a history of superior engineering.

The most important thing to consider is how your animation is going to be delivered. If it is for broadcast TV then most people will be viewing it as standard def interlaced.

Don’t know that specific deck but how many audio channels can it record? If it is opnly four then you can’t send the 5.1 mix (6 channels) plus a stereo.

There is a way to encode the 5.1 mix into a data stream that records onto a tape deck as a two channel stream. Look up Dolby E.

You are better off getting a facility to create the Dolby E track and restripe it onto your tape.

My ubderstanding is that the Canon shoots 1080 60i even in the 24f mode so the correct easy setup is 60i

Are you mixing frame rates in the one timeline? The PAL footage should be first converted. There are various ways to do this including the Nattress Standards converter plugins.

Some people like Compressor for frame rate conversion. It is often discussed hers o a search will give more opinion and techniques.

By the way DV/NTSC is the same as DV25″

    But with different frame rates.

if you import the clip into your existing sequence it will not prompt to change sequence settings.

What happens when you make a new sequence and drop the file into that? Does it prompt to change settings and if so compare the settings between the old sequence and the new to see what is changing.

  • A lot of people reported this here at the COW when ver7 first came out. I immediately upgraded to 7.0.1 and have not seen this behaviour so I assume it was fixed by the upgrade.

Also make sure your still do not exceed 4k pixels as this will cause an out of memory message trying to render. You can test by trying to render each still to see which ones will do this or just check the pixel info.
