Firstly are the files from the card backed up on at least two different drives? If they are then you can consider reusing the card but I would make sure that the two copies play in QT.
The thumbnails might have become corrupted so it is showing the media offline instead of the correct thumb in the timeline. You can find and delete the thumbnail cache if that is the case.

Automatic Duck have an AAF translator to FCP but it would need a test to see if it were fully timeline compatible. It is designed to transfer sequences from AVID so FX and plugins may not translate but it should be better than an EDL

FCP is quicktime based so you will need both a qt wrapper and an edit friendly codec. A proprietary codec and wrapper will need to be converted but I don’t know what Velocity files actual are so there may be a way to rewrap. It is highly unlikely that they can work native in FCP.
As for reading sequence/ project files XML translation is likely if the Velocity can export in a compatible XML or there may be 3rd part software to translate. Again I have not heard of it but I have never needed to look.

You need an I/O card to view FCP on an external monitor with pretty much all codecs.
Some of the Matrox or Decklink options will be cheapest.

Either your friend is not aware of his deck or it may require an option to take 8 channels. I can’t answer that for you so you need to find out from your friend and do a test.
As far as FCP goes, you need to set up your sequence for 8 channel output, patch each channel to i a discreet output and have an I/O card with SDI and 8 channel capability. Kona, Matrox and Decklink should all be OK with 8 channel embedded but firewire won’t.

And at least update your FCP to 6.0.6 which is far less buggy than 6.0.1

If you are using a 4:3 standard def sequence then how do you want a 16:9 shot to behave? If not center punch then letterbox or anamorphic? The program can’t guess and there are many ways to put a rectangular box in a square hole.
If you want something other than the default then you will only need to to adjust your distort and motion tab settings one one clip, copy that clip and then paste attributes to any other clips that you want to have the same settings.

There are third party programs like Digital Rebellion’s pref manager that allow you to store a preference set and trash/ restore that saved setting. I have no skill with scripts but if you can have that execute on program close or open that may be possible.
However, it would be very annoying to the editor to have to reset all their settings manually just because they needed to reboot during an editor or the computer is shut down overnight. I would assume it would be better to do this at the start of a new job not every time the program is closed or opened.

For web use deinterlace is appropriate. I use and recommend Nattress deinterlace plugins. Others will have similar recommendations. The FCP deinterlace is primitive and basically throws away some resolution and doesn’t have adjustable blending modes that can help individual shots.
An alternative is to deinterlace when you export through Compressor which has good deinterlace but it is generic to the whole file and not shot specific.
