The weird thing is that the footage shows 0 blacks only in 10-bit. As soon as I move the footage to an 8-bit sequence, blacks rest at 7.5.
This is true even if I monitor the composite out of the d5 deck and the deck is set to composite out at 7.5.

I happen to be using a J30 today. When I turned it on, it was in 625 PAL mode. Had to change it to 525. Could that be the problem? Otherwise, I have had no problems. It’s a good little deck.

Apparently, HDV won’t convert. So I had to re-compress the footage to DVCPRO-HD. The conform worked, but the footage looks a little weird in FCP once I apply the de-interlace. Anyone have any better recommendations?

Happened to me, too. Turned out it was a faulty card.

…or rent/buy an AJA HD10A and convert the component analog to HD-SDI. Will take far less time than conversion.

Perhaps a Kona 2 and an Io LA? That way you are getting both analog i/o and hd-sdi i/o.

I love mine. I even use it with my Kona 2. It’s been great and extremely reliable/frame accurate.

If you are effectively upconverting the footage to DVCPRO-HD, then you may not need to conform anything. I’ve found this codec looks great going back out to HD-CAM or just DVCPRO-HD tape.
There are, of course, many advantages to recapturing at 10-bit uncompressed. It all depends on the type of show and how much fine tuning needs to be done.
