  • HD capture from D5 – Video goes below 7.5IRE

Posted by Michael Garber on April 21, 2006 at 3:42 pm

    Hi All,

I’m using FCP to color correct some footage captured from D5 1080i 59.94. The Kona2 SDI Downconvert out is feeding an Io which is then feeding a waveform monitor. I know, a little janky, but it works.

Here’s what I’m noticing. The blacks go below 7.5IRE on the waveform monitor. In the past, when I’ve captured HD-CAM 10-bit before – and also when I’ve edited/cc’d DVCPRO-100 or HDV, this hasn’t been a problem.

I’ve checked all my downcovert settings – everything’s set to 7.5 IRE and BETA US. Also checked the analog output of the D5 deck to the waveform monitor and the blacks go even lower – below 0.

Also, the sequence is set to 10-bit rendering, not RGB.

    Thanks,
    Michael

HD is not 7.5 but 0 IRE.

only analog SD should be at 7.5 IRE, Digital video should be at 0

    Gary –

The weird thing is that the footage shows 0 blacks only in 10-bit. As soon as I move the footage to an 8-bit sequence, blacks rest at 7.5.

This is true even if I monitor the composite out of the d5 deck and the deck is set to composite out at 7.5.

You should never monitor your HD in SD when CC’ing HD. When you do this, you don’t push the colors as much as you should because colors start to look over saturated very quickly in SD but are fine in HD.

HD can go into super black, that is -0 IRE. I’ve had camera footage in DVCPro HD go to -7 on the blacks.

7.5 setup is only for SD NTSC analog. In HD you’re only limited by what the networks set, which is usually 0.
