Sounds like a great idea to me.

I’ve only tried one sample, but I was able to sync H4N audio with a 7D movie clip with no trouble at all.

  • I’m running it on the new iMac and it is silky smooth at all times.

    Sorry. False alarm. It works.

I understand that you need to select it. What I was saying is that it appeared as if FCPX wasn’t doing a full analysis on this particular clip. However, I now realize I was just confused as to how FCPX works. It must have done the analysis in background when I wasn’t looking and then it caches the results in the event data, so even if you delete the clip and re-add it to your project, it doesn’t need to re-analyze. Adding the entire uncropped clip to my project forced it to do a new analysis.

You can range select any part of the clip and then do a SHIFT-N. This will create the appropriate number of speed segments. You can use this technique multiple times to split your clip into as many arbitrary speed segments as you want. Then drag the retiming handles to change the speed of each segment. No need to break the clip up. If you want to change where a segment ends, use the pulldown and select “Change Source End Frame” and then grab and pull the little clip icon that appears. Unfortunately, there’s no keyboard shortcut for changing the end frame. Also, each segment is not played at exactly the speed shown. Rather, it is ramped (using a fixed curve) toward the speed of the next segment. The speed ramp options are just a quick and dirty four segment template. I wouldn’t use them unless you actually had to ramp to/from 0%. All that said, I miss the curve where you could create any arbitrary mapping of frames to time.

If you’re interested, here’s the 8-point mask effect I created:

I spent all weekend learning Motion 5 to get this working, so I may as well share the results. Just unzip and drop it in your Movies / Motion Templates / Effects / Keying folder. If you don’t have that folder, try opening an effect in Motion first to create the folder structure.

I too am pretty psyched about the way they’ve integrated the effects with Motion. I wish they had added round-tripping as well, though.

You can apply multiple 4-point masks, or if you know what you’re doing, you can create your own 8-point mask in Motion 5 and export it as an FCPX effects template. But in the end, Apple should have provided a standard 8-point garbage matte, among other things, on Day 1.
