You want to be doing that stuff in Motion which appears to do this as well (or as badly, depending on your point of view!) as it did before. The only mask in FCPX is a four-point one – which is pretty lame by any standards. And there is no tracking. You’re much better served for both of these in Motion 5.

The eight-point garbage matte is gone?! Is there a way of applying multiple masks to the same clip?

You can apply multiple 4-point masks, or if you know what you’re doing, you can create your own 8-point mask in Motion 5 and export it as an FCPX effects template. But in the end, Apple should have provided a standard 8-point garbage matte, among other things, on Day 1.

I agree.. But thank you, I’ll try that.

Although, I’m started to get really excited about the new possibilities we have with the new interaction with Motion 5.. A little bit of fine tuning and it will become very powerful.

The workflow between FCP X and Motion 5 is terrible.

If you need masking and tracking inside your editing application, that´s Avid Media Composer with its Animatte effect.

If you’re interested, here’s the 8-point mask effect I created:

I spent all weekend learning Motion 5 to get this working, so I may as well share the results. Just unzip and drop it in your Movies / Motion Templates / Effects / Keying folder. If you don’t have that folder, try opening an effect in Motion first to create the folder structure.

I too am pretty psyched about the way they’ve integrated the effects with Motion. I wish they had added round-tripping as well, though.

    That’s awesome. Thank you!

I’ll try it right way 🙂
