April 5, 2006 at 2:46 pm in reply to: OT- Apple releases Windows XP Patch for Intel machinesI keep hearing about this, but I’m always looking for the opposite – Windows machines running Mac OS would be far cooler.
I wonder what the strategy is for Apple to run an OS that even Windows is trying(badly) to replace.

How does Motion handle green screening? I rarely use it,but
if there’s a green screen function then I just might start
to become a fan.-Matt

Sounds like a great deal. I had suggested in a past post that
it would also be worth buying Soundtrack Pro from some company that
still sells it and turing it into the Full FCP.I also heard that Photoshop won’t be avaliable until next year
for Intels…any truth to that? What about other Adobe stuff?-Matt

We use the G-Tech Quad drives and they are super duper quiet, plus they have
built in Firewire 400, 800, eSata and USB 2.0 connections (thus the “quad” name). They also look cool.

I always use the source window, but a friend of mine keeps a blank video track in his sequence that he can drag clips up to, lock all the tracks (using Shift F4 for video and Shift F5 for audio), unlock the track where the clip is and then change the speed, and then move back down.
I always use the source window.

We were told that G-Tech would have a card out sometime around now, but
I haven’t seen it yet. We have the quad’s with the g-tech “quad” drives and would
love to do this, but haven’t found anything. It was confusing when we purchased the Macs because we didn’t realize that PCI Express
was different from PCI X, and that there was no card avaliable. It’s like windows naming everything “Explorer”

This is a day late and dollar short, but we have noticed (what we consider)
extremely slow rendering of wmv files with Flip4Mac and we’re
running the G5 Quad’s with 4.5 GB RAM. It appears that this program only
takes advantage of one processor. Our render times are usually twice the time of the
total running time of the timeline i.e 10 minute video = 20+ minute render (approx.)Does anyone know how to juice this app?!!

I am by no means an expert, but I use After Effects quite heavily and also Photoshop.
My flashier graphics get the After Effects treatment and I render it to the settings of the project I’m working on (DV, or whatever) so no rendering when I import to FCP timeline. It’s also great for custom transitions etc..
In Photoshop I can make titles really fast, but for simpler stuff I use the FCP titler.
From my own experience I have found that the FCP titler is really basic and can’t even accurately display most of the fonts that I have installed. I miss the Premier Pro titler I use to edit on.
As far as transition effects, I rarely ever use anything more than the dissolves, maybe a push or slide or some of the built in 3D stuff (which is just faking 2d). Everything else looks cruddy imo. I would love to hear about any good free plugins for this kind of stuff.

“It would be worth it to buy the software specifically to send in for the upgrade, not to rely on for work purposes – so losing it would suck, but I would also insure it with USPS.”
I assume they want you to send in the disc that you own and then they will send you FCP Studio via mail. Am I still not getting it?

I think the general idea of getting a second setup (for cheap) is definitely a good deal. (especially when pirating is so popular) I see that Motion or Soundtrack Pro are going for about 299 – you ad 200 for the upgrade and you got FC Studio for 499!
It would be worth it to buy the software specifically to send in for the upgrade, not to rely on for work purposes – so losing it would suck, but I would also insure it with USPS.
As far as losing stuff in the mail…I live in NYC (Brooklyn) and get Netflix on a regular basis with no trouble.
