Titling & FX Tools
I am new to FCP after 8 years with M100. I am used to Boris Graffiti for titling and Borix FX for DVE transitions. I find the title tools in FCP (including Boris 3d tool)cumbersome for the basic stuff (no multiple tracks, etc.) and using LIveType is overkill. For DVEs, Boris FX offers a lot more than FCP’s transitions. So…I am wondering what you FCP veterans are using for titles and DVE transitions and, for any of you using Boris Graffiti and FX, do they integrate well in FCP.

I am by no means an expert, but I use After Effects quite heavily and also Photoshop.
My flashier graphics get the After Effects treatment and I render it to the settings of the project I’m working on (DV, or whatever) so no rendering when I import to FCP timeline. It’s also great for custom transitions etc..
In Photoshop I can make titles really fast, but for simpler stuff I use the FCP titler.
From my own experience I have found that the FCP titler is really basic and can’t even accurately display most of the fonts that I have installed. I miss the Premier Pro titler I use to edit on.
As far as transition effects, I rarely ever use anything more than the dissolves, maybe a push or slide or some of the built in 3D stuff (which is just faking 2d). Everything else looks cruddy imo. I would love to hear about any good free plugins for this kind of stuff.

I too am rather new to FCP (after 10 yrs of Avid), and am pretty happy with LiveType. I just completed a 10 min project that was primarily text over animated background. The client changed every bit of text several time, and the ability to Ctl Click, Open in Editor, make the changes, Save, and Cmd Tab back to FCP was the easiest workflow I’ve encountered.

We are experiencing that exact problem after years of M100 and Boris. I have just ordered BorisFX8 for FCP over at the Boris online store for $249. I’ll post results when I have them incase you haven’t come up with a better solution in the meantime.

I swapped e-mails with the folks at Boris today and they suggested downloading a trial version of FX8 and Graffiti 4 before I buy. They indicated that the interface with FCP is a “bit different” than M100. I will be interested in knowing your thoughts after your purchase.

OK, I’ll post back when I’m up and running. I am mainly interested in the transitions as other graphics work is done in Motion and AE. At any rate having Boris FX readily available would certainly beef up my FCP. We are holding off on Graffiti for now. Between the simplified version included in FCP for simple titles, and Live Type for more complex graphics we’re satisfied for the time being.
