  • PCI Express SATA cards?

Posted by Tom Matthies on March 1, 2006 at 3:20 pm

I’m looking to add a couple of external SATA drives to a new 2.5Quad G5 which requires PCI Express control cards for external drives. Anyone know of a vender that can supply these yet? Just thought I’d start here on the COW before spending hours doing web searches.
    Thanks in advance.

We were told that G-Tech would have a card out sometime around now, but
I haven’t seen it yet. We have the quad’s with the g-tech “quad” drives and would
love to do this, but haven’t found anything.

It was confusing when we purchased the Macs because we didn’t realize that PCI Express
was different from PCI X, and that there was no card avaliable.

It’s like windows naming everything “Explorer”

I have just finished installing 4 x 500 GB drive into my Quad G5 and it uses the HighPoint 2320 PCIe 8 port SATA II controller card. I like it over all the rest because it is a hardware RAID 0, 5, 10, 50 setup, depending on the number of drives available. MY setup with RAID 0 gets about 230 MB/sec reads and a little slower writes.
The rumors are that there is supposed to be coming out another HighPoint card that has 4 internal port and one Infiniband Port external that can address 4 aditional drives inside their X4 enclosure.

Good luck. In all honesty, the HighPoint cards have been reported as “problematic.” Do Let us know how it goes.

The Sonnet SATA E4P Card product page now shows a ship date of March 15th. OWC has it on their site for pre-order ( https://tinyurl.com/qmpqd ) and shows it will be available in 9 days (or about March 12). I pre-ordered mine yesterday, since I’ve been waiting for this card since the Quad was announced.
