It’s not one button but another option to trim off the head or tail of a shot (without touching the mouse) is

    – Put playhead on frame you want to cut out (or first frame you want to keep if trimming the head)
    – Press Ctrl-V to add edit
    – (If trimming head) Press left arrow to move playhead earlier by 1 frame
    – Press X to mark clip
    – Press forward delete button to delete the clip and close up the gap

That’s pretty quick and if you do this all the time, then it could be made into one button by adding a macro program like Keyboard Maestro or iKey.

Color built into FCP would be a bad thing?

AFAIK, it’s just the number of still images or generators in the sequence, rather than whether they’re stacked or on the same track.

If you switch to Unlimited RT then it’s not really a problem. An 11 min won’t take very long to render for something as simple as text.

If you have a LOT of text generators or still images in a sequence, at some point in the sequence they may stop playing in real time.

It happens because FCP stores all the images in RAM – the setting is in System Settings > Memory & Cache > Still Cache. You could try increasing the memory reserved for Still Cache but be aware that it might have an impact on other real time performance.

June 1, 2008 at 8:41 am in reply to: PRO RES 422 HQ- ever-changing data RATE

It’s because ProRes 422 is a variable data rate codec depending on how complex the footage is. The clips you saw with lower data rate would have been less complex = easier to compress = lower data rate.

You would have to duplicate each sequence, make the changes and then add to the batch export. If you do this a lot then you might want to look at Traffic from xmEdit.

You’re probably using the trial version of Flip4Mac which only allows the first 30″ to be exported.

May 8, 2008 at 7:13 am in reply to: Problem recording Audio Wild Lines in FCP

    David

In my experience, the usual reason it doesn’t work is that FCP is expecting to have a video input and isn’t getting one. I’ve found the best way to do this is to set up a dedicated capture preset that you only use for voiceover recording.

    – Choose Final Cut Pro > Audio/Video Settings > Capture Presets tab
    – Locate the current capture preset in the list and duplicate it
    – Change the name of the duplicated preset to “Voiceover”
    – Change the Video Digitizer to “None”
    – Change the Audio device to the desired input and click OK

Next time you want to record a voicover, select this preset in the Capture Settings tab of the Log & Capture window.

May 2, 2008 at 10:10 am in reply to: ProApps not for sale – Official!

    February:
Frank Capria publishes the rumour that Pro Apps is for sale on the provideocoalition.com blog. Comments are mixed. Some say it may be a positive move, others dismiss it as pure FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt).

    April:
NAB comes and goes without any announcement of a sale and Final Cut Server ships.
Frank Capria announces he’s joining Avid as a product designer.

    May:
Apple takes the highly unusual step of categorically denying that Pro Apps are for sale.
