  • Problem recording Audio Wild Lines in FCP

Posted by David Bertman on May 7, 2008 at 3:25 am

I’m having an issue in FInal Cut Pro that I cant seem to figure out.

I want to record a bunch of wild lines. Pretty basic. I’d like to have set up a mic and have an actor record many different readings UNINTERRUPTED. (I don’t want to have to stop between his takes)

In Avid I would have gone to the capture tool and selected audio only then recorded the lines into a mic hooked into the system. I would have a single audio only file that would have all the takes and I could cut in the pieces that I wanted in the timeline where I needed them to go.

However, in Final Cut Pro, when I go to log and capture and deselect video it doesn’t let me record. The “Capture Now” button seems to be available, but I click it and nothing happens.

In fact while the VU meters show that the mic is being heard, there is no device that indicates the mic on the device control list (it’s a USB mic, but I also have tried it with a firewire attached iSite camera). In the FCP user manual there is no indication that a mic can be used in the log and capture mode, so I don’t know if that’s the way to accomplish what I want…

I did try the Voice Over tool. However it was doing a number of annoying things:
    1) It plays back the audio in the timeline. I couldn’t turn it off. I suppose I could silence the audio speakers on the timeline but that will un-render all my audio I have done and seems like an extra step.
    2) It only records as long as the timeline sequence. If I want an uninterrupted run. I am forced to make a “fake” timeline with a phantom clip far far down and hope I have made it longer than I need. Again, seems odd to have to do this type of workaround for what should be a simple option.
    3) It records the audio directly into the timeline. Where are the original files. If I want to put them in the viewer and scroll through them I cant.

What exactly am I doing wrong. How do people record NON sync voice over wild lines in FCP?

    Thanks,

    Dave

Make a new sequence. Lay Video SLUG on that timeline for a duration of about an hour. Then use the VO tool to record your VO. When you are done, drag the clip created on that sequence into your Browser.

    – In FC: Set your capture with “Non Controllable Device”. Then “Capture NOW” (only audio).
    – In QT: File> New Audio Recording.

    JVC DTV-17″
    SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.

Setting the device to non controllable device was the first thing I did, and as I mentioned the Capture Now button wouldn’t do anything when I hit it. It wasn’t gray, so it obviously seemed like it should be working, but nothing was recorded or indicated when I would hit it.

And yes, I ended up using QT ti record. But I wish there was an elegant (or at least non-silly workaround way to do it in FCP, like you can in Avid)

    Thanks

Instead of blaming FC, you better learn how to set it properly to make such a simple operation as recording an audio.

What an amazingly unhelpful response, Rafael.

Obviously if it was working properly I would not have asked the question in the first place.

I’m having a similar problem with “Capture Now”. I’m trying to do a rolling capture of some footage from a DVD player. After about 2 seconds I get this error: “Capture Now has reached the end of the tape. All existing footage between the point where you started the capture and the end of the tape was captured successfully.”… I end up with a 20 frame clip in my “Capture Scratch” folder but nothing in the actual Bin.

I’m guessing your DVD player is not controllable … did you set it as an uncontrollable device?
If not, FCP will be looking for and expecting to find some timecode.

    Cheers

In my experience, the usual reason it doesn’t work is that FCP is expecting to have a video input and isn’t getting one. I’ve found the best way to do this is to set up a dedicated capture preset that you only use for voiceover recording.

    – Choose Final Cut Pro > Audio/Video Settings > Capture Presets tab
    – Locate the current capture preset in the list and duplicate it
    – Change the name of the duplicated preset to “Voiceover”
    – Change the Video Digitizer to “None”
    – Change the Audio device to the desired input and click OK

Next time you want to record a voicover, select this preset in the Capture Settings tab of the Log & Capture window.

Excellent post Martin!!! That one certainly rates five cows. And just for that I’m gonna buy DH_Box tomorrow which I’ve been coveting for a long time.
