Problem recording Audio Wild Lines in FCP
I’m having an issue in FInal Cut Pro that I cant seem to figure out.
I want to record a bunch of wild lines. Pretty basic. I’d like to have set up a mic and have an actor record many different readings UNINTERRUPTED. (I don’t want to have to stop between his takes)
In Avid I would have gone to the capture tool and selected audio only then recorded the lines into a mic hooked into the system. I would have a single audio only file that would have all the takes and I could cut in the pieces that I wanted in the timeline where I needed them to go.
However, in Final Cut Pro, when I go to log and capture and deselect video it doesn’t let me record. The “Capture Now” button seems to be available, but I click it and nothing happens.
In fact while the VU meters show that the mic is being heard, there is no device that indicates the mic on the device control list (it’s a USB mic, but I also have tried it with a firewire attached iSite camera). In the FCP user manual there is no indication that a mic can be used in the log and capture mode, so I don’t know if that’s the way to accomplish what I want…
I did try the Voice Over tool. However it was doing a number of annoying things:
1) It plays back the audio in the timeline. I couldn’t turn it off. I suppose I could silence the audio speakers on the timeline but that will un-render all my audio I have done and seems like an extra step.
2) It only records as long as the timeline sequence. If I want an uninterrupted run. I am forced to make a “fake” timeline with a phantom clip far far down and hope I have made it longer than I need. Again, seems odd to have to do this type of workaround for what should be a simple option.
3) It records the audio directly into the timeline. Where are the original files. If I want to put them in the viewer and scroll through them I cant. What exactly am I doing wrong. How do people record NON sync voice over wild lines in FCP?
Thanks,
Dave
