Can’t make a non-self-contained movie
Posted by John Felt on April 29, 2008 at 6:21 amHi all
Has anyone else had this problem? I am trying to export an hour long movie, and I’d like to make it not self-contained so I can quickly bring it into compressor. However, Final Cut refuses to recognize that I unchecked the box that says “make movie self-contained”. Am I missing something else?
Thank you all for any help you can provide. It is much appreciated.

April 29, 2008 at 6:36 amHow big is the file it gives you? Non Self contained fils still can have some weight in the size. Try and play the file on another computer or disconnect your media drive and see if it still plays.
There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

April 29, 2008 at 6:46 amThe files are like 12 gb for an hour- the same amount as a self-contained file. The weird thing is that I have another sequence in the same project that I was able to export as a reference file and it was like 1.03 gb.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks again!

April 29, 2008 at 2:04 pmMake sure your movie is completely rendered before exporting, otherwise it will render while you export and make a large movie. That includes turning on the full options in your render all and render selection menus under Sequence.

April 29, 2008 at 2:26 pmWhat codec did you select for the compressor of the sequence? Codecs that use temporal compression, like HDV and MPEG, cannot be used for a QT reference movie as they require to rebuild the GOPs. Also the sequence has to be fully rendered in order to get a reference movie as QT needs to create pointers to the renderfiles

“Your FC must have something really wrong. A really would be scared of a Refference movie of 12Gbs or even 1Gb. You can get quite big Project files when the project contains many footage, sequences, layers, effects, etc. But a QT Reffrence movie in just a “play-list” pointing to clips.

..and always a big mess on top of the table. -

April 29, 2008 at 3:33 pmThank you all for your responses. I am using a DV codec, and exporting with current settings. It is fully rendered.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks again for all your help,

“Are you absolutely sure? Sorry to harp on this, but you have to go to the Sequence > Render ALL and Sequence > Render selection menus and make sure that all the options are checked, including ‘full’. By default these options aren’t checked.

April 30, 2008 at 7:09 pmOK! That seems to be the problem, that it wasn’t “full”y rendered.
However, it does leave me a little perplexed:
The reason it needs to render is that I added color correction to the entire hour and a half. Is that normal that it would need to render it? I have never seen that need before.Anyway, thank you all for your help. It is greatly appreciated.
