    Here’s my two cents:

If you ready any behind-the-scenes info on this project, you’ll see that HOURS and HOURS were spent rendering each frame, so unless you have access to a sizable farm, I wouldn’t expect to try to match this exactly. Furthermore, photographic materials such as these require great renderers (like AR3), although I think they used Maxwell on these jobs.

Anyhoo, to answer your question, I would be sure to start with a Blinn or Oren-Mayer shading model first. The clay is definitely not a Phong. For effects like this, I have found that blurring the reflections helps tremendously. Finally, top it all of with a nice displacement map, and you should be on your way to getting started. Renders of this quality also depend greatly on your lighting expertise (which is going to really help you here). Finally (really this time), it is key to nail this effect in post. Don’t try to do it all in the renderer, as it will truly slow down your pipeline (at least in my experience).

    Hope this helps!

Be sure you are enabling the “Front Blur” feature in the Depth tab of your Camera. Start tweaking/refining the values in the “Front Blur” and “Target Distance” fields to optimize your depth pass. Again, you only have to enable front or rear blur (most of the time, I use front).

    Hope this helps,

March 7, 2010 at 3:40 am in reply to: How to Get Full Windows Explorer for AE?

I’m sorry, but my question pertains to the fact that there are certain options in Windows Explorer (like shortcuts, etc) that are not a part of the Explorer dialogue within AE.

If anyone has any insights into this matter, I would gladly like to hear them!

    Thanks!

Hm, in my experience, it seems to depend wholly on your quantity of plugins and quantity of RAM. Since we’ve already dismissed these, it may come down to the speed of your HDDs or SDDs.

    Other than that, I’m clueless.

Cool. Just didn’t know if anyone noticed a difference.

I ABSOLUTELY agree that lossless is the way to go – thanks, Dave!

I agree with Adam. The specs you gave would have been great about four years ago, but you shouldn’t settle for anything less than an i5 or i7 chip with as much RAM as you can afford (I would suggest 8GB at least).

Mac Pros are nice, but they are still waaaayyyyy too expensive. I also agree that a beefy GeForce card will suffice beyond a Quadro unless you want to drop 1-3 thousand on a new video card (which you won’t really need unless you’re running Massive or some comparable program). Furthermore, I would highly suggest an Nvidia card, as many Adobe products are “optimized” to run on their hardware. Also, in looking towards the future, there may be some nice CUDA development being done on a consumer level in years to come.

Regarding OS, if you’re leaning towards a PC, you definitely want to go with Win7. I’ve been running it for around a year now and have had no major problems running C4D and the Adobe suite.

Finally, I would suggest buying your components from NewEgg, as they tend to have the best price/customer service, but that’s just my opinion…

    Hope this helps.

I’m sorry, but could you clarify your question? Are you wondering how to create a stamp?

January 21, 2010 at 6:10 pm in reply to: sharp edges in boole

A co-worker recently offered this simple (but not reliable) solution: just boole the objects, convert them to polys, then bevel the edges of intersection…

Again, it’s not the cleanest method, but it may work in some scenarios.

I’ve already written to Maxon to request some “fillet at boole” checkbox, and it may be a good idea to do the same.

    Hope this helps!
