Sounds like you may have a graphics card issue – I use Send to Motion from FCP on a regular basis…

    The basic process is:

    1) Use the text tool to write your word or phrase
    2) Use the paint tool to cover the letters with paint strokes
    3) Add a Write-On behavior to animate the paint stroke(s)
    4) Apply an image mask to text (or group containing the text) and use the paint stroke (or group of paint strokes) as the source for the image mask.

You need to flatten the group for the mask to work.

That’s a good technique. You could do the whole thing in Motion: create the freeze using the Hold Frame retiming behavior, trimmed to the duration of the freeze frame. Duplicate the layer, mask the top layer with the b-spline or bezier mask tool, add filters, etc.

You can also try turning off your preview thumbnails in the layers tab, and turning off layers you don’t need to see.

July 31, 2008 at 6:00 pm in reply to: Opacity Falloff/Gradient Effect?

Sure – use an image mask. First, create a shape and fill it with a black and white gradient running vertically. The, select your rectangle, and choose Object > Add Image Mask. Drag the gradient to the well in the HUD (or even directly onto the image mask in the Layers tab). Set it to Luminance. Adjust the gradient to taste using the interactive gradient tool in the Canvas.

Thanks, Mike. I had changed the target disk under system settings as I had mentioned, so not sure what the issue was, but I’ll try once more on the next shoot.

  • You need to crank up the Attach to Emitter value to 100% in the Emitter tab.

If you are doing a lot of these, AutoMotion from Digital Heaven can pump out a slew of Motion projects based on a template you give it and a database of text you import. Super-fast to update them all as well.
