    Hey guys,

I’m pretty new to Motion 3. I build some kind of “3D” Object. With I’d like to animate around the X-axes and I put a light in front of it to make it look nicer.

I built all of the elements with Motion’s rectangle-tool (no Photoshop layers). My first rectangle is 300 x 44 pixel. So I rotated and moved the others 90 degrees and 22 pixel. So it should give me a perfect little 3D-object. To check if it had worked, I put a light object in my 3D-box. And it looked good – meaning that I couldn’t see any light coming out of the box.

But now, here comes my Problem: It still looks bad! You can see the edges of each rectangle. And I can’t figuer out why! How do I make it look clean???

To give you an idea, I uploaded it here, please take a look:

PS: Oh, and heres another newbie-question: How can I apply a mask to a folder?

    Thanks a lot!

Be aware that 3D in Motion is not true 3D, as you have say in Maya or Lightwave but 2.5D. Think of it as floating flat postcards in xyz space. Objects have no depth.

    Hi, thanks for your reply.

I know that it’s not 3D, but this doesn’t explain why my animation looks bad. I’ve seen a lot of “3D” objects created with Motion, also some tutorials dealing with creating those kinda things, and the results looked just fine.

Perhaps you could post some stills so we have a better idea of what you mean by the subjective term- bad. 🙂

    Hey Noah,

Have you seen the test movie-file? The link is in my first post.
Here are some stills – I marked the “bad” looking parts of it.

I see what you mean but I’d guess the layers aren’t perfectly aligned or are a few pixels apart. I’d make something much larger so the alignment tolerances don’t have to be so tight and then just zoom the camera out more.

Motion anti-aliases everything so your rectangle shapes actually have feathered edges to transparent.
Now this would not normally be a problem, but by butting two together you will get a gap. 🙁

    Sorry for the bad news

    Hey guys,

thanks for your help. anti-aliasing sucks in this case.
I re-made my shapes in Photoshop, imported it to Motion. Now it works as I wanted and looks really good – which means I’m not far away from finishing my first reak Motion project.

There is one more problem I’m dealing with – I’m trying to add a mask to a complete folder (which contains several layers) – but it doesn’t work…. is there a work-around or is it impossible to do? THX

You need to flatten the group for the mask to work.
