  • Gerald, are all of the projects still in the projects bin?

If so, hide the ones you don’t need by moving them in another folder temporarily, or get Event Manager

    https://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/EventManagerX/

It’s $5, and as much as I wish I didn’t need it, it’s worth it.

    A possible workaround.

Try opening your psd file in timeline view. Opt-T does this.

Within timeline view, select all of your layers and ctl-d to type in a new length.

Now step out of the psd file (cmd- left bracket).

I’ll bet you can now make the clip longer.

You can do this in the event browser or in the timeline. If you do it in the browser, every clip you subsequently edit into your timeline can now be lengthened beyond 1 min. Any clip already in your timeline I believe will still be limited until you replace it.

March 16, 2012 at 7:05 pm in reply to: why does “reveal in finder” show the shortcut?

For what it’s worth, when you’ve got the shortcut under your cursor, double-clicking still opens the original file.

The way FCPX works nowadays, you’re probably going to need to save a copy of whatever you’re working on and re-import the new version, but opening the shortcut works just like opening the original.

    What’s the problem?

We still need an “open in editor” workflow to allow us to alter files that are already in our projects, and have the changes trickle through the edits.

I was very happily able to do that with psd files on 10.0.2, but they screwed up the psd process and I now keep a layered copy for editing and a flat copy for importing.

I’m curious… try expanding all of your audio. Is it possible that there is some hidden audio that’s tucked into another clip that’s extending beyond the end of the video?

Another idea… try compounding the entire timeline. Where does it end? With the video or does it add the black that you see?

I’ll bet that if you trim the compound clip you can export just the portion that you want.

I’d be tempted to duplicate your project (without renders) before you compound the entire project. I’ve seen a few instances where compounding and breaking apart can leave clips in slightly different places than where you’ve placed them.

You can go into your event browser and look for the missing media icon. It’s a small triangle with an exclamation mark in it. When you find these, you can either try to relink the media, or go ahead and delete the clip from the event if it’s offline and not needed.

This can easily happen if you alter one of the original files, such as a photoshop file.

March 7, 2012 at 1:00 am in reply to: Couple of questions: roles and compound clips

I agree that colors, and not just for audio, would be a helpful thing. When I edited in Avid, I used that quite frequently.

Meanwhile, using roles takes a little getting used to, but it’s quite viable. And the roles index lets you turn clips on and off by role, and it also lets you expand and contract the audio clips by role.

I want to see a way to do this with a keystroke, to make the workflow faster and more robust. Right now, you can minimize your audio tracks, and expand just the roles you want to see at any one time. This keeps the audio flatter and easier to navigate around.

You can also view the clip roles as the text on the clips. Not as immediately identifiable as a bright color, we have a few workarounds.

Personally, I’d like to see both colors, and the ability to order the clips in the lanes by a color hierarchy, meaning that clips with a particular role will migrate up or down the lanes to be with clips of their own type.

This might be a good use of the precision editor. You can see the frames, and quickly trim it to the black.

Personally, I think once inside the clip, where you can see the area that’s visible in the compound, you should be able to pull the start or the end limit to trim the compound.

I don’t mind trimming the black frames, it’s not a huge thing to me.

    Enjoyed the spot Noam.

The orange lens flare/light leak is fun. Did you build that in motion of just figure out how to do it in the timeline?

It’s probably easier than it looks.

I’ve never run into it. I’m running 10.6.8.

March 6, 2012 at 11:45 am in reply to: EX1, 550D and Z5 footage in same timeline

I used to transcode everything to prores, but now I just mix it in the timeline, and keep editing in real time, rendering it all out when I’m finished.

If your processor can handle this, it’s the best way to go.

As far as the stuttering, I’m guessing you are shooting in pal at 25 frames per second? I use the Z7 and I shoot at 24p all the time and I don’t have any trouble. Seems like it should work. Are you shooting and finishing in 25 fps?

I’d be curious to see how well FCPX handles a multicam clip from the three cameras. It’s supposed to be able to mix formats.

    Good luck.
