My two cents would be to look at Final Cut Pro HD Express. Its a watered down version of FCP that might be better suited for your needs.
Can you tell us a little bit about how you plan on capturing your media, what kind of drive, what cameras and tape format do you use?
iDVD has some really good menus and is fast and easy to use for your work.

When you look at an SD picture on an HD LCD TV… Its always going to look “pixelated”. HD LCDs dont’ do SD video very well at all. As a matter of fact…. it shows all of the imperfections of SD video in its glory.
Besides all of that… Is you HDV video progressive or interlaced? If so, this can make a difference, too.

Actually, you need to go into the menus and set your camera’s iLink Conv to the opposite that you have it now. Meaning, if its on, turn it off. If its off, turn it on.
The reason I say this is because different Macs with different version of FCP work differently. We have a Mac G4 used for logging, and we have to turn iLink Conv to off. Then I have to turn it back on for my Mac Pro.

How are you importing these clips?
Are you going straight from the camera? Or did you copy the media files to a drive?
I ask this because the way you copy the media can have a huge impact on importing the files. If you want to copy the files to a drive, you need to make a complete duplicate of the flash card to a folder on your hard drive. You can’t just copy the media files only. This won’t work and you’ll get error messages like you are getting.
This isn’t a bug. Its just a new way of working with media files from Sony since this is their first installment of solid state media.

I have to ask….
After fumbling thru the manual, I finally got network rendering to work… sort of….
Every time that I try to do this with my Mac Pro and G5, if they don’t crash, my video looses sync or skips to different areas in the video.
I haven’t had success with this yet, and I have been a little hesitant about using anymore until I hear that things are worked out.
Besides, my Mac Pro could render by itself equally as the network render.

You’ve got a real quandary.
As for the computer, you’ll only be able to work with SD video, not HD. There’s nothing you can do about that, except ask for a new computer for your birthday, maybe.
As for the rendering issue, sounds like your media doesn’t match your sequence settings.

I’ve come to that conclusion…
The answer is to downconvert to DV and log the footage that way. Then I can select Preview Audio to hear the audio.
I guess I overcomplicated things with this….

I would like to do this, but HDV Log & Capture box doesn’t have this feature.
So far, the only option that I have is to install an AJA IO LA, downconvert, and monitor thru it.
