I’m doing just fine with all the latest.

I haven’t made the jump to Leopard just yet, but we are having to purchase a new system because of increased business – that’s good BUT I have heard all the nightmares with Leopard and FCP.

Oh yeah, ALWAYS clone your system drive before jumping into an update. EVERYBODY!

February 13, 2008 at 1:48 am in reply to: Media Manager with Nested Sequences

Media Manager takes into account of your entire project. You said you had music and other stuff, too. Well, its also looking at this media.

What compression scheme are you translating to? This will make a difference in your space estimation. And one more thing…. FCP’s space estimator has always been really off. I can capture a clip that is only about a gig in actual size but when I capture FCP will tell me it going to be a 12 gig. I think the estimator is based on Uncompressed video.

February 13, 2008 at 1:42 am in reply to: FCP and XDCAM HD workflow problem

    To answer your question….

XDCAM HD is 1440×1080. Now, if you are using the new EX1 camera, the HQ setting (35 mbits) is the only true 1920×1080 that XDCAM has to offer according to Sony.

But if you are using any other setting or using the F350 or F330 cameras, the image size is 1440×1080. FCP does translate this so that you can output 1920×1080. What you are seeing is a result of the compression scheme. XDCAM HD is based on HDV which is also 1440×1080.

Others will have different sizes, like DVCProHD is 1280×1080. But when captured into FCP, you capture card will interpolate this as 1920×1080 just like it does with XDCAM HD.

So as long as you are setup correctly using your Easy Setups, everything will be correct on output.

They actually do listen to us…

Have you used any other NLE software? FCP makes the most sense of all the products out there. And as for feedback from editors… You can send feedback to Apple right inside of FCP. Just click on the Final Cut Pro menu and click on Provide Feedback. Enough responses… they will do something about it eventually.

    No… It’s not a bug.

Apple put it in there for a reason. Albeit, a twisted reason. I will admit that it does get rather frustrating using this new temporary snapping feature. It would have been nice if we were given the option to use it or not.

February 8, 2008 at 4:06 pm in reply to: ProRes HQ Graphics – Stutter When Rendered

Usually problems like this are caused by your RAID drives throughput.

Yes, I know… ProRes422 HQ is supposed to be much better than Uncompressed 10-bit, but it still has a high throughput requirement. At least, 220 kbps.

Check out your drives to make sure they aren’t failing or your throughput isn’t fast enough. AJA has a utility that can do this for you at their website.

February 8, 2008 at 4:01 pm in reply to: Performance Issues?

    Drew…

You have what is know as memory problems. I had this same issue with my system last year when the Intel systems first became available to the market. Memory plays a HUGE role in performance on a FCP system, now.

The question here is… Where did you buy your memory AND is all of your memory in matched pairs from the same manufacturer?

Alot of people will say that I am blowing smoke but this was the exact situation that I saw last year. Not all memory made for the Mac Pro systems are the same. They could all be certified but your results could be spotty at best.

I purchased my system thru ProMax and they were seeing the same issues. I worked with them and they replaced all of my memory with Kensington memory (8 – 1gig bars). Since then, I have not had a single memory problem.

Also, Apple published a tech doc on just this issue. Take a look…

    https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304492

This is from the Apple doc:

Note: DIMMs must be installed in pairs of equal size from the same vendor. For instance, you must not have one or three DIMMs on either riser at any time. Additionally, two DIMMs from different vendors should not be combined and used as a pair.

We went further and made sure that the memory sticks were in sequential order of serial numbers, too. Whether that made an impact or not doesn’t matter. I just know that it works.

February 5, 2008 at 8:32 pm in reply to: New to HD

    I think you’re missing it here, Agnes…

What we are trying to say is that there is no broadcaster out there that will accept HDV on a MiniDV tape.

If you go to MiniDV tape, you’ll have to downconvert to standard def signal for it to be acceptable to a few that will accept it.

Almost all broadcasters will only accept BetaSP, DigiBeta, DVCPro, DVCProHD, or HDCAM. That’s all. I haven’t found a broadcaster that will accept MiniDV anymore but that doesn’t mean they won’t.

The key here is to figure where you are going to broadcast and contact them about acceptable formats. There are a few still accpeting DVCAM. Just check with them before purchasing something that will do you no good.

February 4, 2008 at 9:47 pm in reply to: Clone an XDCAM disc?

It was supposed to be available with the release of the Sony Transfer software 2.1 BUT you can see clearly this didn’t happen.

Thus, Sony means Soon Only Not Yet or Shipping October Next Year….

January 28, 2008 at 4:15 pm in reply to: FCP6 to FLV (via CS3 plug-in) frozen video!

    This is an easy one…

Export your timeline to a Quicktime file, use Compressor to compress your FLV files and this issue will go away.

If you send your sequence straight to Adobe Flash CS3 Video Encoder, you’ll get this everytime. Its much better to use Compressor than using Adobe’s encoder. Don’t ask for any specific reasons, I don’t know that for sure… but it works just fine using Compressor.
