Walter… Come,on… Dude.
You know the people that I speak of… There are many, many people that are trained the week before the show to do nothing but showcase the products at hand. I’m not referring to the pros who work the booths. Not all booths have pros in them.

You got it!
As a case in point, I ended up last year giving a demo on XDCAM to several people since the Apple rep had no idea about importing XDCAM.

Here’s the other point that people seem to be missing…
If you want to do serious editing, you have two choices, Avid or Final Cut Pro. Yeah, I know there are others and I’m not trying to start a flame war. I’m just speaking the truth.
Well, the amount of FCP systems and the amount of Avid systems would tell you that the customer base would sell you systems alot more than a pre-canned sales pitch on the floor at NAB by someone who doesn’t even know the system they demo.
I can understand fully Apple’s and Avid’s position on this.

Good catch, Jeremy!
I was going to paste that in and got side tracked while editing…

I would also suggest that you remove the one gig of Apple memory bringing your total to 8 gig. FCP works best in multiples of 4 (and works with 2 gig, too). So you can have it configured to 2 gig, 4 gig, 8 gig, 16 gig. This is the specs from Apple and I haven’t had a single issue with this.

Very true, Bob!
The market has shown that you CAN mix apples and oranges without too much pain involved.

Sounds fine…
But if you are running the ATI X1900XT video card, you have to run it at 16x in the slot configuration. This means that you can’t run your AJA Kona 3 at 8x (full time). The only selection that you have available is the 4x-8x combo selection.
So, how does this work for you?

Can you play that clip?
I was just wondering because HDV isn’t supposed to work on that system. We have one and it will not play HDV at all or capture. Yes, I know HDV is highly compressed and file sizes are similar to DV but HD resolution…
HDV is spec’ed out at a minimum of a Dual 1.25 G4 system

[derik thadd] “I am trying to create low-res versions of the HD content so I can create a muticlip that has 14 different angles in it that will play back in realtime. When I say “offline” mean “low-res” “
Just for future knowledge. The XDCAM HD codec file sizes are close to that of DV so if your computer can HD, just stay with the full res images and offline edit that way. OR if you need to convert your media, use Media Manager to recompress to DV Anamorphic. Its less taxing on the computer than PhotoJPEG and the files sizes aren’t much bigger.

[derik thadd] “I have been trying to use FCP MM to recompress offline versions of a bunch of HD clips for the past week and it has failed every time. “
Usually when you see the term “offline” when referring to media, that means the media is not present. If this is the case, there’s nothing to recompress and that will give you your error everytime.
What format are the clips you are trying to recompress? Are they XDCAM HD?
