[Shane Ross] “Do you have QMaster set up to use ALL of your processors? “
I have it set to all 8 processors using Compressor. But I don’t think, FCP has anything to do with QMaster, does it? Is there a way to tell FCP to use QMaster settings?

Oh… I guess I did leave out a few key points.
[Shane Ross] “You mean self contained QTs? I haven’t seen that…I’ve seen a speed BOOST with the Octo over the Dual 2 G5 actually.”
Yes, I am exporting to self-contained QT files for Compressor. I have found that its much faster to create DVDs from HD for my clients using DVDSP, rather than thru Compressor. I just set my compression to 6 mbits and its awesome. But exporting the actual files seems to take twice as long.
How much memory do you have on your system, Shane?
[Shane Ross] “Where are you exporting the media to? From and to the same drive? “
I am exporting these to an internal Work Drive, not my system drive. Its only used for temporary storage to create DVDs.

Sorry for the sales pitch but…
We currently use the Facilis TerraBlock at our facility and it runs circles above the rest. Yeah, I know that its not a true sharing storage but I’m sure that Facilis is on it.
I can tell you that I have never had a configuration issue that wasn’t very easily solved or ANY performance issues of any sort. I’ve even had our 12D (6 TB) down to less than 20 gig with absolutely no dropped frames. It holds true all every time.

As a general rule of thumb, ALWAYS clone your system drive before applying any updates. Drives are cheap, your time is not.
Use a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your drive.

[Herb Tarlek] “HDCAM HD is 4:2:2, Xdcam Ex is 4:2:0”
Very true…
Another thing to consider is that you can set FCP to render everything to ProRes very easily and this should get rid of any of these issues you may be seeing.
The other option to consider… Capture all of your media to another codec. Something that people seem to miss about HDV and its derivatives is that Sony intended for this to be an acquisition format, not an edit format. Meaning, that HDV is an encoded transport stream of video, not an edit stream. It was originally expected of editors to capture into another codec for editing but the industry has changed that thought and has left us with a quandary.

How is timecode set in your camera?
If its sets to the default of auto, this will cause you great pain. The auto setting deals with DF and NDF, and chances are you’re working in the opposite DF than your tape.
You need to set your camera to the timecode standard that you use. This will solve most of your headaches. The other will have to be up to the shooter.

Just to let you know… Blackmagic isn’t known for its down-conversion capabilities. Now, AJA is known for this. As for the EX1 down-conversion, did you try using the down-convert out of the camera?

What you are seeing is large companies like Apple and Avid are noticing that people are spending their time at booths that deal with all of the supplemental programs or devices that we have to use to get the job done.
And, that’s what myself and my company does at NAB. We already know about Apple or Avid and what they are offering. The Internet does a really good job at predicting the future – not always correct but at least it gives us a heads up in a direction.
The direction that most are taking with NAB has to do with all of the seminars and teaching sessions. These are very important to us and my company… So, it doesn’t matter if Apple or Avid is going to be at NAB. Its a networking experience that we all need to make our jobs more well rounded.
And that’s my opinion…
