    Hello All,

The advertising agency I work for just got a Sony PMW-EX1 to replace our old BetacamSP unit (Sony DXC-637 shooting to a PVV-3 Deck).

So far our downconverted HD from the EX1 doesn’t look as good as the SD material shot with our old DXC-637. However, we are uable to downconvert our HD properly. Ideally, we’d use the Blackmagic Multibridge Pro to capture an SDI-HD signal from the EX1 for downconversion. I did not realize that our PC was built prior to PCI-express, so we would be unable to use the Multibridge with our system.

Bottom line question is this. Should properly downconverted HD from the PMW-EX1 look better than SD from the DXC-637? Back in its day the DXC-637 was an expensive camera.

    Thanks.

I guess I’m sticking my neck out here, but I have to agree with Aaron.

I’m using the EX1 since a month. When downconverted to SD my old DVCPRO-50 camera with a broadcast lens makes better pictures when it comes to filigrane trees and leaves in the background. I still think that it is impossible to get the same picture out of a camera that costs 1/3 than a good broadcast lens alone.
But for HD the EX1 is a great camera and it fills the gap somewhere between the Z1 and the high-end HD-cameras.

    Felix,

Out of curiosity, what method are you using to downconvert? I just ordered the Blackmagic Multibridge Pro, and am hoping that makes a difference. I’ll use the SDI/HD output, edit in HD, and use the Multibridge to downconvert back to SD.

    Best,

    Aaron

    Aaron,

I tried several methods for downconversion via SDI. Please look at this thread:

Picturewise it didn’t make a difference if I had EX1 downconvert or exit EX1 via DH-SDI and do the downconversion in media100 while aquiring.

Just to let you know… Blackmagic isn’t known for its down-conversion capabilities. Now, AJA is known for this. As for the EX1 down-conversion, did you try using the down-convert out of the camera?

I’m putting the EX-1 footage in a DV sequence. Cut (have RT), CC and right before exporting I set the sequence to Prores HQ, Render all YUV in High precision an Motion rendering BEST. And forget about the field order.
    The result is awesome.
