OctoCore Strangeness…
Posted by Mark Maness on March 11, 2008 at 8:50 pmWe just recently upgraded to an OctoCore, moving our G5 to a log and capture system. I have every fully installed and running.
Now, the strangeness is with FCP. I have all of the latest software updates.
When I export a sequence to Quicktime, I have noticed that it takes twice as long as it does with our Quad system. Strange… it should essentially be about the same time to export, I would think.
Has anyone with multiple system seen this?

March 11, 2008 at 9:01 pmYou mean self contained QTs? I haven’t seen that…I’ve seen a speed BOOST with the Octo over the Dual 2 G5 actually.
Where are you exporting the media to? From and to the same drive?

March 11, 2008 at 9:25 pmOh… I guess I did leave out a few key points.
[Shane Ross] “You mean self contained QTs? I haven’t seen that…I’ve seen a speed BOOST with the Octo over the Dual 2 G5 actually.”
Yes, I am exporting to self-contained QT files for Compressor. I have found that its much faster to create DVDs from HD for my clients using DVDSP, rather than thru Compressor. I just set my compression to 6 mbits and its awesome. But exporting the actual files seems to take twice as long.
How much memory do you have on your system, Shane?

I am exporting these to an internal Work Drive, not my system drive. Its only used for temporary storage to create DVDs.

March 11, 2008 at 9:52 pmI have 4GB RAM, and I too have a work drive that I export footage to for making DVDs or other purpose.
DUnno what to say. Do you have QMaster set up to use ALL of your processors?

Have you gone into your sequence > render all and sequence > render selected menus and turned on the ‘full’ rendering option? Then you render and then you export? It seems to me you are rendering while exporting. I bet you don’t notice all the full rt effects cuz your machine is so blazing fast, or something to that extent.

I have it set to all 8 processors using Compressor. But I don’t think, FCP has anything to do with QMaster, does it? Is there a way to tell FCP to use QMaster settings?

Every effect is rendered. The only thing that isn’t rendered is the video clips themselves that I captured.
BTW, the OctoCore isn’t that fast… I wish! I did notice that FXFactory effects are near realtime but still degraded for RT. Colorista is still very sluggish until you render.
This OctoCore isn’t the next generation, its the previous generation that came with Tiger. I’m still not ready to make that jump just yet. I still have some plugins that aren’t compatible yet.

That’s your problem. It should be set for 4 instances (not 8) and also on some particular combinations of settings will grind your 8core to a halt. In my few days with Leopard, it seems to have sped up compressor considerably, even on first gen 8 cores (which I have as well).

March 12, 2008 at 4:24 pmThat’s odd… I’ll try it.
Do you know of a way to add services in QMaster? Can I add FCP as a service? Or does it use the Compressor settings for FCP?

QMaster is a language that I am not versed in. I don’t think you can set up FCP in QMaster. Shake and COmpressor yes, but not FCP.

March 12, 2008 at 6:07 pmI was sure of that myself… but I thought maybe there was something that I didn’t know.
