about to SNAP!
Posted by Jeff Carson on February 11, 2008 at 5:36 pmthis new FCP2 timeline “snapping” behavior is driving me crazy!!! What were they thinking?

February 11, 2008 at 6:11 pmBefore FCP2, tapping the “n” key would turn snapping on or off in the timeline. Very handy, and perfectly suitable way to trim clips or ensure they were lining up snugly against adjacent clips. Now, in FCP2, snapping turns on at every conceivable moment. Seems if you do not want snapping on, while you are trimming/dragging a clip, type “n” to disable snapping. Next time you touch any clip, snapping is back on, whether you need it or not.

February 11, 2008 at 7:14 pmthanks Walter – I’m still using 6.01 and don’t have an issue with it. I wonder why this got put into 6.02?

It’s a bug. Something that got broken when they fixed something else.

February 11, 2008 at 8:09 pmNo… It’s not a bug.
Apple put it in there for a reason. Albeit, a twisted reason. I will admit that it does get rather frustrating using this new temporary snapping feature. It would have been nice if we were given the option to use it or not.

February 11, 2008 at 10:47 pmIT’S A BUG IF WE DON’T LIKE IT!
Sorry, got carried away.
I’ve found myself appreciating the thought behind the reasoning for changing the snapping behavior and I have actually enjoyed using it. I just have to keep reminding myself to hit N again and again and again. The whole issue smacks of “What the hell were they thinking?” and “Who makes the decisions on this stuff?” What meeting was held where a lobbying effort was mounted to impose this lame feature on the rest of us without an option to turn it off? What bonehead product manager looked at it in action and said, “Hey, this is GREAT idea! Everyone is gonna LOVE it!” ?

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

February 12, 2008 at 7:38 pmMy question is: is there beta testing at Apple? Real beta testing with real editor editing real video.
How come they update FCP with so much obvious bugs like this one? It seems to me FCp is no more made for real world editing…
I don’t even know which version of FCP would run best for me, as they all have some important bug in them. Should we all uninstall Studio 2 and get back to 5.1.4? (which is the last “ok” version that I remember of…)
and thanks for confirming that I’m not insane and that the dreaded snapping button comes back whenever it feels to.
