Not sure how to easily explain this so here goes…

I have a 1.5 hour timeline consisting mostly of clips from other sequences. Our film was shot using an HDV camera and a solid state audio recorder. Each day we shot, we created a sequence where we dropped footage and synced it with the audio. From there we made in/outs from those daily sequences and dropped them into our master timeline. There’s other elements in there such as music layers, some text elements, etc. but 90% is clips of other sequences.

So now I want to make a copy of my project using just referenced clips from my daily sequences and the misc. other elements and drop it on another HD. With 1.5 hours of footage I should be looking at about 13-14 gigs of data give or take with handles etc. When I load Media Manager I choose Copy, Delete Unused Media, Handles and it tells me that I need 686 gigs of space. Am I missing something? I also tried Right-Clicking on the sequence and choosing Make Sequence Clips Independent but to no avail. Please help me get this under 500 gigs.

Media Manager takes into account of your entire project. You said you had music and other stuff, too. Well, its also looking at this media.

What compression scheme are you translating to? This will make a difference in your space estimation. And one more thing…. FCP’s space estimator has always been really off. I can capture a clip that is only about a gig in actual size but when I capture FCP will tell me it going to be a 12 gig. I think the estimator is based on Uncompressed video.

Hmmm. I think I could remove some audio clips and try it that way. The footage I’m starting with is HDV from an H1. I don’t get the option to choose what it goes to that I’m aware of.

I guess I’ll try the copy and see what happens. I only have a 500 gig drive so we’ll see if it fills up.
