Hey gang…
USB drives are not media drives and shouldn’t be used in FCP for anything except for archival purposes.
USB doesn’t quite have the umph needed for editing but they do make great archival drives.
My suggestion, when using FCP, disconnect your USB drive and then connect it later after quiting FCP to archive.

Ok… Maybe I should have said full Red support.
I say this is because Sony and Apple did the same process on XDCAM when it gave support for it but not full support for all of its settings.

[Greg Jones] “t’s either a sign that Apple’s slowing down developement of Final Cut Studio or they’re coming out with a completely re-written bad-ass version. Any Comments. “
No… Apple just placed FCS on the back burner until they could finalize Final Cut Server software. Now that the cats of the bag… I’m sure they’re back at it now.

Are you using Sony’s Transfer 2.5.1?
Have you made sure that everything is up to date on the firmware of the Macs?
Have you made sure that your cards are in the right slots and the memory is placed in the risers correctly?
One more thing… Is you memory the same sizes and from the same manufacturer? This can make a huge difference in your issue.

All very good points, guys…
But you know as well as I, tested products are much much better than something that is not. When you’re talking about data and digital video, reliability has to be the most important factor here.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking the Larid solution at all. It sounds like an awesome idea and they could kill that market IF the price was about half of the current asking list price.
We are all about saving money where we can BUT we do work in a field where reliability has to be the most important factor in any equipment purchase – nothing more horrifying than loosing your data when a client is in house or loosing years of work because we cut cost.
All things to consider… The Facilis TerraBlock isn’t cheap, but just price the others out there that are proven.
We work very much like Donato does. It works very well. You can work in segments on different volumes and put it all together at the end or do like we do. We produce weekly 30 minutes shows for a couple of cable networks. So, we have one editor log the footage on a volume, unmount it and pass it to the one editing the show, unmount that and pas it to another for sweetening and out to XDCAM HD disc for mastering. Its a proven workflow that works very well for us. And the TerraBlock allows us to work very efficiently.

Very neat idea… But beware, its an untested system and it doesn’t do Uncompressed video.
Look at your needs very carefully before jumping on something.

Excellent system!
But keep in mind that its not a true shared storage system, yet. But soon, they will release an update to make it that way… for a fee, of course.
If you’re not worried about that, its gold! We have been using it for more than a year with very very few glitches and only a couple of times did we need to restart it because of a system crash. That’s awesome stats in the SAN world. Just ask anyone who has an EditShare or X-RAID.
Facilis’ tech support is out of this world. Immediate response when and if you ever need them.

There is a new firmware update that addresses these type of kernel panics on the new Mac Pros like yours… Check Software Update and see if that comes up. If not, Apple has this available on their Support site.
