FCP 5.1.4 issue
Posted by Paolo Mugnaini on May 2, 2008 at 2:31 amHello I have a problem my FCP is not responding as it used to. I am cutting a documentary and I have 3 1tb HDs, I am using one as a scratch disk and the other 2 are where the source material is. Now my fcp is struggling like crazy…I have firewire power card but for some reason i see the beach ball before it can do ANYthing. I still haven’t updated to QT 7.4.5 cause I am afraid it will mess with my version of FCP.
Can anyone help please?
ThanksPaolo

May 2, 2008 at 3:13 amHi,
it is empty…1TB….I have tried different ways of setting up….the video, audio capture and render on the Free 1TB and the autosave volt etc on another that is half empty…still chokes.
I am on safe RT, i tried lowering the quality of playback.
Now…..if I turn the lacies off, and I use only my Graid on any other project, the machine works fine…after shutting down and restarting the app.
could it be the Lacies? I don’t know, but I know I need to get a fix for this relatively fast.
thanks

May 2, 2008 at 3:40 amI didn’t get your reference…but i think i figured it out……i also have a lacie 250gb via USB, not much on it…nothing i use for work anyways….once I turned that off….everything works like it has been. I hope it will last.
It may be corrupted and I probably should run Disk Warrior on it.
Thanks!!

Hi Paolo,
Before I used to pass DiskWarrior only to the System HD. Now I sow that the performance of the external HDs improves A LOT when the I run DW on them.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1

May 2, 2008 at 1:32 pmHey gang…
USB drives are not media drives and shouldn’t be used in FCP for anything except for archival purposes.
USB doesn’t quite have the umph needed for editing but they do make great archival drives.
My suggestion, when using FCP, disconnect your USB drive and then connect it later after quiting FCP to archive.

May 2, 2008 at 2:41 pmYou right Wayne. I haven’t read properly the post. USB is not suitable even for DV footage.

May 2, 2008 at 3:18 pmYeah, I didn’t realize they were USB. Definitely get rid of those while editing.

May 2, 2008 at 7:42 pmGuys,
Maybe I explained it wrong.
The lacie USB in question is NOT part of my FCP HDs group, it is, as you suggested for business files etc, but it still created an issue i guess. The other Lacies are on Firewire as is the G-raid.
Thanks for the great suggestions and support!! This forum rocks!
I hope that was the issue. I’ll have to see when I get home form work ad start working.
thanks againP

May 3, 2008 at 2:32 amHi Paolo,
I don’t know how old are your LaCie but they may need a Firmware update released by LaCie few months ago. You can find it in the LaCie web site.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
