Well… I have to ask. What do you plan on doing in the future? What kind of camera equipment do you have now and are you planning to upgrade your cameras?
The reason I ask… If you are looking at going P2, HDV, or something like XDCAM HD, you’ll have to have the latest of version of FCP to edit these formats properly.
If all you are using is BetaSP and/or DV, then what you have is just fine.

It sounds like you don’t have teh software installed properly. Go to this address and download the second link for the software.

When the software is installed, your Sony Easy Setups will be at the bottom of the list.
You are using FCP 5.1, aren’t you? If not, that’s a major problem since earlier versions of FCP don’t work with XDCAM HD.

As for converting the video, your only option is to use Compressor. But I have to ask… what is the majority of your footage shot on?
As for your workflow with XDCAM HD and HDV… We use both of these formats all of the time. We capture everything at DVCProHD and edit on a DVCProHD 1080i29.97 sequence. This is the only way of true compatibility between the two formats that doesn’t eat up all of your time converting files.
BTW, the Sony Transfer software will run independently of FCP and it will tell you of your clip settings.

Here’s why you are confused…
Most of the time when people talk about HD especially interlaced video, its refered to as fields, not frames. Thus 60i is 60 frames of interlaced video, 59.94i is the equalivalent of 29.97.

You really need to recapture this footage using the DV Easy Setup. This is the best option for your needs. Compressor doesn’t do the center punch option without having to change its setup.
I would strongly suggest that you recapture all of your HDV to DV.

If you are using XDCAM HD, you need to using Sony’s Easy Setups that are included with the Sony Transfer Software v 1.1.
You can’t mix HDV and XDCAM HD unless the XDCAM HD is recorded SP quality, which is the standard for HDV – 25 mb/s

We’ve been using the On2 Flix Exporter since last May.
It works great BUT you should probably think about using a new computer with it. It is a little taxing on your system. I have a Dual G4 that compressed thirteen episodes of a program that we edit and it took it about 8 days to compress all thirteen episodes at 640×480 300kb. This was done for a website for out program owner.

This is the reason why we went with the XDCM HD system with HDV support.
XDCAM HD discs are $30 for 66 minutes shooting in HQ mode (35 mb/s). Again, myself and my company are very reluctant to archive to hard drives because they do fail and don’t last near as long as tape and especially XDCAM HD discs.
All of our programs are mastered to XDCAM HD using the DVCProHD 1080i60 Easy Setup. Its a great workflow for us.
By the way, I still have some old DV tapes that are around 8 years old that still look great when used…

I completely agree with you 100 percent!
Tape does degrade over time and will eventually break. But let me say that a hard drive’s life span is still much shorter than tape. The lifespan of DVDs are still to be determined also. BUT, the real question you have to ask and everyone should agree with this… where and what do I archive my footage? DVDs are still too small for any real life project. Blu-Ray is still too young to rely on. DLT is the way to go, but it is terribly expensive.
So, what do you do if you are a small shop? You have to use hard drives. Well, I don’t feel comfortable with that option since I have three LaCie door stops righ now. After about four years, a hard drive will become very unstable and may die IF you don’t spin them up every week. Who has the time for that?
Panasonic shoots a much more beautiful picture than Sony when it comes to P2 vs HDV. There is no question P2 is more beautiful than HDV.

I would look to Apple’s tech support page to see if there are any updates to you PowerBook dealing with the hardware. There has got to be an update for your system to make it current.
