    Hey bud…

If I were you I would still talk with the video guys. If you can’t get anywhere… just go up the chain of command until someone will listen to you. Because, you have to waste so much time just doing what the video guys could have easily done for you.

If you find one… Let me know.

I hate having to use SoundTrack Pro just to normalize clips.

Well, you can’t export a clip to Quicktime, then use AfterEffects to do any kind of work on it and render it to the XDCAM HD codec, it jumps and skips frames badly. Almost looking like it missing frames of video.

Now, let me say that you can send a clip to Motion and back just fine using the “Send to Motion” command. It’s just exporting the video to Quicktime and using any third party programs independent of FCP. Maybe I’m doing something wrong but I haven’t gotten them to work with the XDCAM HD codec.

BUT I can export the clip to Quicktime, use AfterEffects and render it to something other than the XDCAM HD codec, I’m fine. But then I have to render in FCP in order to view it.

My whole issue is time. I have to work in realtime as much as possible and rendering takes some of that away.

March 7, 2007 at 2:56 pm in reply to: XDCAM & HDV tapeless workflow question

[Andy Mees] “4) you can hope like hell, along with the rest of us, that Apple (or whoever) finally addresses the mixed format issue in FCP, in one way or another, at next month’s NAB shindig.”

    I’m praying for this one…

To add to the answer for Colin. We’ve been doing just type of situation for the past year now with XDCAM. In September, we upgraded to XDCAM HD because of a thieft of our XDCAM camera while on a shoot in Canada.

XDCAM HD is an awesome format but Andy is correct. You’ll have to record everything at SP (25 mb/s) to keep everything compatible. But, you’ll have to wait for NAB to get the full compatibility of the new Sony HDV drive unit. This drive records M2T files that FCP cannot understand at the moment. I may be wrong on this, maybe the drive can write Quicktime files, I’m not sure. Let me give you a word of warning though… Although these are awesome cameras and the tapeless workflow is awesome, you’ll still have to put up with conforming your timelines before output and the render times can be quite lengthy if you have a long program to output. And one more thing… You can only work with HDV and XDCAM inside of FCP. Outside of FCP, your video will look pretty crappy (that’s been my experience).

To combat that, myself and many others out here, have been digitzing all of our footage into the DVCProHD codec which saves time on output since there is no need to comform and the compatibility with other programs is excellent. You’ll have to do this especially if you wish to shoot in HQ mode. This is the workflow myself andf my company has chosen. Our programs have taken a major jump in quality since doing this.

[walter biscardi] “And there’s really nothing wrong with the 3-Way except you have to be very careful of how far you push the levels and colors. I’ve used it a ton.”

Oh yeah…. I’m not knocking it at all. I loved the fact that it is realtime and doesn’t need rendering on output. That’s it… You could say that I got spoiled.

    Yeah… I get it…

I guess you could say that I got used to the realtime of CC 3-way.

    Walter,

Have you been able to use Colorista in realtime? Aren’t you supposed to be able to use at least one layer in realtime? It is an FXplug plugin. I’m confused because I seem to have to render everything I do using it.

March 6, 2007 at 2:54 pm in reply to: Kona 3 to edit HDV?

That is most of the purpose for the card…

AJA and Blackmagic both have support for HDV playback. BUT, it is highly recommended that you use this card to digitize into the DVCProHD codec. This will make your edit faster and less painful on the output since you don’t have to conform your timeline.

AJA is my recommmendation and there are many flavors of the Kona series cards. You will have to stick with the PCIe versions. Personally, I recommend the AJA Kona 3 with the option K-Box. The Kona 3 is the most expensive card they make BUT its also the best for the money. You can do anything with this card and if you have been in the business long enough, you know that clients will always throw you a curve ball. This card can upconvert, downconvert and cross-convert. It can do any frame rates in NTSC and PAL. You may think this card is serious overkill BUT when a client comes in with tapes that are 720p and 1080i, you’ll be glad that you have a Kona 3.

March 6, 2007 at 2:39 pm in reply to: Rendering xdcam hd — video speeds up like crazy

[pwkvancouver] “I don’t see how you can capture at a diifferent compression than what the material was shot in, unless you’re going through sdi and capturing it straight into FCP. I’ve been using the xdcam transfer software. Do you use that or capture from the deck using SDI?”

Yeah… There are times when I have small projects like commercials where I will import the media from disc and when I am editing a show, I digitize through my Kona 3. For programs, I digitize so that I can have full compatibility for anything that I may need and so that I don’t have to wait on those very long conforming times before I send to disc or write to disc.

XDCAM HD is very much like HDV in the sense that you have to conform your sequence before outputting to whatever source you need. AND, the render times on this can be very long on a 35 minute program (bars, tone, slate, program content and black trailer).

Most all of us here on the COW capture our HDV into the DVCProHD codec for ease of use and overall compatibility.

BTW, I would suggest that you look into a capture card like the AJA Kona 3, if you are in the business to make money. Its a very worthy investment.

This is what I have been trying to say…

Yes, they are the same flavor but very different and not compatible on the same timelines. This is the issue that we are ALL having with FCP. Nearly all of the other NLEs can mix formats on timelines but FCP cannot STILL. Even Sony’s Vegas can mix anyting on a timeline and you can buy this software at BestBuy or Circuit City.

BTW…. A little word of warning. You cannot export XDCAM HD and expect to do anthing with it. You cannot use AfterEffects with it. And if you had a converter box for your HDV machine, you cannot digitize into XDCAM HD.
