    I’ll agree…

I’ve seen time like that on my Mac Pro Quad 3.0.

A 25 minute HD program compressed for DVD will take me about 3 hours. I haven’t tried an H.264. I did try to create an HD-DVD once from that timline and Compressor estimates the compression time to be about 36 hours for a 25 minute HD program.

From my experience with the Mac Pro Quad 3.0…

Check your memory. Is it installed properly? Is all from the same manufacturer?

Here’s an Apple tech doc on this:

    https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304492

Trust me on this… I had the same issues as you and memory was my problem. I bought my system through ProMax and they replaced all of my memory with Kensington memory. The lead tech guy at ProMax told me about the issues with memory maufacturers and the new Mac Pro. He said that most manufacturers have made memory that works BUT FCp becomes very unstable with it. They did extensive testing and found that Kensington memory was the most stable.

March 12, 2007 at 8:57 pm in reply to: NTSC 16:9 Screen Size

I would suggest that you contact your auto show people and ask hem what resolution they want.

HDcomes in two screen resolutions, 1280×720 and 1920×1080. Most all plasma screns are 1366×768 meaning the actual screen size is equalivalent to 720p HD video.

You have two options here… One, you capture all of your footage at 720 or 1080 and edit accordingly. Two, you can capture and edit your program in SD video then upconvert to 720 or 1080. Pick one.

Tell us what you need to do and then we might be able to help you.

If you are working in SD video, then you Easy Setup will have to be Anamorphic. If you are working in HD, then the sky’s the limit on this.

[walter biscardi] “At NAB we will be looking at a Fibre Channel solution again, but that’s because I want shared storage for our three suites.”

I just wanted to chime to say that I love our TerraBlock… BUT if I had to do it all again, I would go with another manufacturer.

    Why?

Well, The TerraBlock is plenty fast and does great for shared storage. Our workflow is increased ten fold. But, here’s the issue I have with Facilis. The TerraBlock does not resize on the fly, so you’d better get your volume size right. If not, you’ll spend most of a day copying to another large volume if you mistakenly make it too small. This has happened to me a few times.

March 9, 2007 at 8:17 pm in reply to: jaggie Graphics and XDCAM HD HQ 35 sequences?

I understand fully what you are saying. Now, I am using NTSC video and my experience with XDCAM HD and graphics has been great, no jaggies.

From personal experience, when jaggies occur are because of one of many things. One of which is wrong format, like using DV graphics on an 8-bit Uncompressed timeline. Another is a field dominance issue. Another is the style of text you have chosen.

But as far as jaggies using the XDCAM HD codec, I have seen none.

Have you seen this in PAL or are you just asking about the format in genreral. If I’m not mistaken, FCP converts the color space to 4:2:2 while inside of FCP but I haven’t noticed any loss what so ever when written back to disc.

I haven’t seen any of this at all and we use HQ mode only.

Do your graphics have a sharp thin lines?

March 9, 2007 at 4:27 pm in reply to: XDCAM & HDV tapeless workflow question

[Colin Powers] “Another related question has arisen: How are people ingesting the XDCAM SP material? Firewire through the auxiliary iLink/HDV card on the PDW-F30 deck? Throught the SDI out on the F70 deck or the F350 camera? Or via component HD? Is there significant degradation going component into the Kona card?”

Well… Personally speaking, I stay away from the HDV codec for many reasons. One the render times are terrible. Two, HDV is not an edit stream, its an elementary data stream, and that is why FCP has such a hard time editing with it.

As for ingesting your media, you can use any method you wish. I have found for our purposes that digitizing the old standard way to be the best for our company since we mix HDV and XDCAM HD. I prefer this because I don’t have to conform on output and if I need to composite any video outside of FCP then I don’t have any issues. We catputre everything at DVCProHD 1080i60, even though we shoot XDCAM HD using HQ settings at 30p and our Z1Us are set to Cineframe 30.

As for the Kona card, I use a Kona 3, so, in order to capture my HDV I need a converter box (AJA HD10AVA) to convert my analog component video and audio into an HD-SDI signal (or SDI if using DV to upconvert). As for degradation of video… I don’t see any of it at all. You could probably see it on a scope but when it airs, you’ll never know.

March 8, 2007 at 2:36 pm in reply to: XDCAM & HDV tapeless workflow question

[Colin Powers] “Just to confirm, Wayne you are capturing in real time through your capture card to the DVCProHD codec from either an XDCAM or HDV deck, then saving time in rendering afterward? Therefore losing the tapeless advantage, but saving in render and output time. (And getting a little boost in quality.)”

Yeah… It does seem to loose the tapeless concept but there are many advantages to this method of madness.

How long are your programs going to be?

The reason I ask is that for a thirty second commercial, it takes about 5 minutes to conform on my Mac Pro Quad 3.0. AND, here’s the kicker also… All reltime effects have to be rendered before the conforming process, which means, if you color correct your enitre program, you’ll have to render the entire program before FCP will conform your video for output.
