Hello, I have spent hours searching the forums but I could not find a solution to this. I am editing an HDV project on an HDV Timeline, fcp 5.1, PowerBook G5, from a G-Tech 500GB portable drive connected through firewire 400.

This project works great when I connect the drive to another powerbook and to a G5 System. BUT when it is connected to the powerbook in question I get this very strange problem. During playback of the HDV timeline, the audio is horrible (scratches, distortion, etc) ONLY when the audio is not “paired” with an image. If I put an image with the audio, then it is perfect, but if I move the image slightly, the portion of the audio that is not linked to the image is horrible. ??????

I tested to see if it was a sync issue, but it does not matter what image I put on top of the audio. As long as the audio has any image (whether it is the original or anything else) the audio works fine, but as soon as the image is removed the audio goes crazy.

I tried re-installing FCP and trashing prefs, already. Again, this only happens in this porwerbook, when I run the same project with a different powerbook or a G5 I don’t get the audio problem.

Any ideas as to what may be the issue? Thanks! Sarah.

I would look to Apple’s tech support page to see if there are any updates to you PowerBook dealing with the hardware. There has got to be an update for your system to make it current.
