Oops… I said that wrong…. I appologize.
I meant to say 2 gig per pair of cores. So… Yeah, that means at least 8 gig to run effeciently.
I can understand this fully since I have the Quad 3.0 right now and I saw a marked difference between 2 gig and 8 gig in performance. My system has a total of 8 gig and I have had no problems with running all sorts of programs at the same time.

Seems like Apple has a way with no thinking about the user base sometimes…
Even though we have an Apple store in the Memphis area, it seems like no one there has any clue that Apple also sells professional products. They can point it out on the shelf but that’s about the extent of their knowledge (that includes the support desk).

How are you transfering to SD? Thru a converter or thru your Mac via a capture card like a AJA Kona series or Blackmagic Decklink?
I do this all of the time, but I let my F70 machine do the downconvert for me or I can use my Kona 3 to do this with the same results. Always a perfect downconvert.

Next time, you might ought to consider downloading a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner. Just do a search on Google or Yahoo and you’ll find it. Then you can clone your boot drive before you do an update. This can get you out of many messes.
BTW, I have all of the latest versions with absolutely no problems with any XDCAM material in FCP 5.1.4 and MacOS 10.4.9.

Try reinstalling the software.
I had to do this about three times before it worked myself. Since then its been working flawlessly.

Sounds like you might need a sync generator. AJA just released the Gen10 which can do both HD and SD for around $399. I don’t think its been released yet but would be a worthy investment.
Something else to consider…. You can’t compare digital video to analog. There will always be differences. Why is it that SDI video looks less saturated than Component? Different color spaces.

ALWAYS make sure that your absolutely unreplaceable components are backed up on a seperate drive. Shows can be redigitized but components can’t be rebuilt easily and quickly.

Get this…
I live in the Memphis, TN area. We have an Apple store here and absolutely nothing is presented in it concnering professional product offerings from Apple. Surprising isn’t it? Seems like a waste to have an Apple store in a major metropolitian area were FCP is widely used (or would be more if there was more of a presence).

From what I understand from several of the Prost Productions conference speakers, you really need 2 gig of memory per core to get optimal performance. This means that you really need a miminum of 8 gig for optimal performance.
As for the video card, buy the best that you can afford. The NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 is absolutely the best but most of us can’t afford the $1500 upgrade. At least, get the ATI Radeon X1900 XT. Its the best bang for the buck.
