In Apple’s defense… (God forbid that I take the side of a large company) BUT with around 800,000 FCP users, that would mean that need to ready at least on million copies of FCS2 before the first shipment.
Those numbers are large but us geeks want our software now… Therefore a later ship date.

Here’s my take on this…
Anytime you use firewire, you have to think that I may lose any info that I have on the drive. I’ve lost drives with LaCie and G-Tech. I can’t answer why this is but it seems that everyone somewhere at sometime has had a firewire drive failure.
Every manufacturer out there can’t absolutely guarentee 100% that their drive won’t fail. Nobody can do this. BUT for some odd reason, it seems that SATA drives seem to be more reliable.
If you’re looking for absolute reliability, you’ll need two firewire drives. One to use, and one for daily backup. But that’s not very realistic. What I like to do is use an internal drive for all of my project files and necessaary components. Then you can use your firewire drive for media, because if your drive fails, replace it and recapture.

This is due to the fact that Americans don’t like change. And, the fact of us having to change from 4:3 to 16:9 is absolutely painful and confusing to those who don’t care.

Whoa… Hang on!
Clarify yourself a little… Do you mean “Print to Video” or “Edit to Tape”? Those are the two options in FCP. If its “Edit to Tape”, how are you doing this? Are you using the “Edit to Tape” window or dragging your timeline to the “Edit to Tape” window? Usually the second option is the best option.
Next, Is your tape striped with black and timecode?

This one throws up a red flag to me…. What are your sequence settings? The reason I ask this is because with whatever version of FCP you have, “Print to Video” may have trouble working if it thinks its writting HDV and your deck is telling your Kona LH is not an HDV machine. Check your Audio/Video Settings and see if the machine control is set to Sony HDV Firewire. This will cause your error, too.

The Panasonic’s BT-LH1700W will work as an awesome field monitor. It will run off of DC battery or AC power. It’s a little on the large side but awesome. Panasonic also makes a 9″ version of this monitor called BT-LH900W. I think the price is higher than the “17 model. Go figure…
But both will work just great.

I would suggest that you clone your boot drive to a firewire or secondary hard drive before upgrading to FCS2. This is for two reasons… one compatibility, and two, things do go wrong whne you upgrade any software so this is primarily for protection reasons.
I say that because I have the latest and greatest software available righ now, but we have a small feature film that we started on back last August and it will not open at all under MacOS 10.4.9 but it works fine under 10.4.8.
The program is call Carbon Copy Cloner. You can do a search on Apple’s support site or use Google to find it for you. But I do suggest that you do this first.

Gary is absolutely correct….
The bandwidth required for video capture is so great that being able to read and write on the same buss is too much for firewire 400/800 to handle. This is the same issue that we have with the AJA IO. Its not an issue per say but a bandwidth issue.
You can add any number of firewire cards to your system as long as you have slots available.
Personally, I’d say that you need to replace your firewire drives with SATA drives which are faster and better for video editing than firewire 400/800 drives. If the reason for firewire drives is for the use of external drives, ProMax (promax.com) has external drives that have firewire 400/800, USB 2.0 and SATA conntections all on one drive. Switching to SATA drives will solve most of your issues with connectivity and bandwidth. Don’t get mad, this is just my opinion and advice.

As a piece of personal advice….
When purchasing 3rd party memory, look very seriously at Kensington. I had lots of problems with other manufacturers. I purchased my system thru ProMax when the Mac Pro first came out and memory was a real problem. We ended up swapping memory twice before we hit on the fact that Kensington was work directly with Apple on their memory.
The important thing here is to work with a reputable company that will swap with you if there are issues.
