AJ-HD1400
Howdy…..wondering if anyone has any insight into why my AJ-HD1400 won’t play nicely. I’ve got DVCPRO50 material Im trying to capture…..and I’ve got deck control via firewire…but no picture or sound. I downloaded the manual and went through the menu item by item…..tried setting the output to auto and manual overide to DVCPRO50…..either way…I get nada in in the capture window. I just updated to the latest FCP this afternoon from 5.1 to 5.whatever its at now this afternoon. I noticed alot of people talking about bus interfearance if multiple firewire devices are connected……I am trying to capture to a firewire 800 1TB drive. I have also noticed on some older SD panasonice decks when I plugged them in it would make firewire drives automatically disconnect…..what’s the deal? To much bandwidth?

We haven’t had an issue with DVCPro 50 material capture through that machine here. Do you see clean video through either the SD-SDI or Analog Composite outputs on the deck? Just checking to make sure that the deck is playing properly.
The deck should auto detect that it’s DV 50 an play out normally via Firewire so long as you haven’t changed a lot of settings. One thing I would do, especially if it’s a rental, is reset the deck to Factory Defaults. This is covered in the manual.

add a FW card to your computer and all of this will go away.

Gary is absolutely correct….
The bandwidth required for video capture is so great that being able to read and write on the same buss is too much for firewire 400/800 to handle. This is the same issue that we have with the AJA IO. Its not an issue per say but a bandwidth issue.
You can add any number of firewire cards to your system as long as you have slots available.
Personally, I’d say that you need to replace your firewire drives with SATA drives which are faster and better for video editing than firewire 400/800 drives. If the reason for firewire drives is for the use of external drives, ProMax (promax.com) has external drives that have firewire 400/800, USB 2.0 and SATA conntections all on one drive. Switching to SATA drives will solve most of your issues with connectivity and bandwidth. Don’t get mad, this is just my opinion and advice.

This isn’t an issue with our 1400, nor was it an issue with our 1200A decks. We captured via FW to FW800 drives all day, with no issues until we switched to SATA. This was with a G5 Dual 2.0, G5 Quad and a Mac Pro 3.0. Might be an issue with the SD decks, but not with the HD decks that we can see here.

when they plug the 1400 deck, FW drives or other devices on the chain would disappear. That is definitely a buss issue.
I “read” that he had 2 separate issues, one was the DV50 not playing out correctly and the other was too many devices on the FW buss.
