  • Flip4Mac -> green face !?

First time I used Flip4Mac (File/Export/Using QuickTime Conversion) I didn’t change a thing — just used whatever came up, and got a nice-looking, but too-big, .wmv file.

I’ve been trying to use 2-pass VBR, changing the size of the image to 320×240, with these results:

First couple seconds are fine: a white-on-black title, dip to black, fade up to face against vibrant background. All colors are fine. But within a couple of seconds, the eyes start getting little purple blotches, and the face gradually turns green. Not green-ish — Green. The background stays the correct color, as do the clothes.

I have tried a few setting changes, have rendered the video in the timeline. Same results — despite getting perfect results the first time.

Second issue: Flip4Mac/WMV doesn’t appear as an option in Compressor.
Is there something I can’t seem to find in Preferences for this?

    Thank for any insights.

This is a known issue with some newer versions of Flip4Mac plug-in. Check out their support site. You can download an earlier version (1.06, I think) that does not have the 2-pass VBR problem, or you can use CBR or 1-pass VBR.

Yeah it definately seems to be a problem with the 2-pass option, happens to us every time. Like Tom says, stick to 1-pass encodes and you should be fine.

I find it annoying that Telestream hasn’t fixed it. You can go back to V 1.0.6 and VBR should work in that. You can keep the player at the latest version, but change the encoder plug to the older one.

[Tom Brooks] “This is a known issue with some newer versions of Flip4Mac plug-in. Check out their support site. “

Thank you (sincerely, as opposed to the sarcasm later on for Telestream).

Does this strike anyone else as outrageous? I’ve wasted a morning on this, thinking I must have been making some silly mistake (besides using the product, that is.) Maybe there is something on the support site, but if so it sure isn’t prominent. And their forum is a broken link.

I downgraded to 1.02, which didn’t show up in FCP, uninstalled & reinstalled F4M, upgraded to 2.1.0.33 F4M, trashed pref’s in FCP, restarted… And finally got my .wmv file done, after two hours of pointless effort.

And it still doesn’t show up in Compressor.

Thanks, Telestream. I didn’t know you were running a stealth beta program.

    Bob,
After reading your post I went to their site today myself, just to be sure they hadn’t snuck in a fix for the 2-pass VBR thing. Appears as not. I take it you switched to either CBR or 1-pass to get your WMV out? Last time I looked I still got the green goo with 2.1. Thanks.

Thanks very much. I used one-pass VBR.

I’d hate to think what I would have done today if it weren’t for this forum.

More from FFM support just in. By the way, this came exactly two hours after my question submitted on their support website. Impressive in terms of technical support response, I’d say.

Gosh I should check the COW more often.

I’m a beta tester. In the beta, low key frame rate solves the green issue.

BTW, to see Flip4Mac in Compressor you need to set it to QuickTime Export Components as Flip4Mac is . . . a QuickTime Export Component. You will then see in the Inspector a field that says Encoder Type. It usually defaults to 3G. If you select the pull down you’ll see Windows Media as a choice.

There’s a PDF on the Flip4Mac site specifically for Compressor.

    https://www.flip4mac.com/pdfs/Flip4Mac_WMV_Compressor_QuickStart.pdf

Anybody else having issues with 2.1.0.33 can go here
    https://www.flip4mac.com/support.htm
and click on the word “beta” on the bottom of the page and you’ll be able to test 2.1.1.70
Please do give them feedback on any issues you find.

It seems they’re also going to have an Episode plug-in for Compressor too. They announced it at NAB.
