As far as I know, you shouldn’t have any issues with this deck. At my previous place of employment, we used these very machines with Media100s (that tells you how long ago this was). And the machine performed flawlessly. As for insert edits… I can’t answer this one because we never used the machines in an insert edit mode. But my rule of thumb is, if the machine is able to do insert edits on the machine, it will most likely do insert edits in FCP.

Why does it not? We have the same machine we use every week to make BetaSP dubs for broadcast with closed captioning. As a matter of fact, if you capture from this deck and any deck that has a tape with closed captioning embedded on it, the captured footage WILL have the closed captioning emmbedded in FCP, too. Currently, I don’t think there is any broadcast deck that will show you your closed captioning. You will need a decoder for this. I use a cheapo Wal-Mart tv for just this purpose, besides, this is what most people will watch your programs on.

Can you explain thin one better? Are you talking about house sync (reference video) or audio sync issues?

You have to have at least FCP 5.1 to run on the new Mac Pro systems. Version of FCP before 5.1 are not Universal Binary, which means you can’t run these on a Mac Pro system.

We have the best keyer in the world at our finger tips… Shake. Yeah, I know… its another program to learn and outside of FCP but if you really want to get the job done right, you need an outside program for just that thing. And besides…. You can port your video back an forth to Shake thru FCP without having to export clips, open Shake, do your operation and export from Shake to FCP.
Shake is a little daunting at first but I learn at a class at NAB, you have to look at shake as speaking naturally. If you can talk out what you want to do Shake has the operations setup in the manner in order to do what you want. Yeah, its a little more than that but that’s the basics in Shake. And for $500, you can’t beat it unless you use a DaVinci.

And look how slow your computer was….
Apple’s thinking is that the computers are fast enough to view/edit in realtime then when you are done you need to render before outputting. Maybe not the best mode of thinking but its the one we have.

To answer all of your questions….
Yes, to most of your questions.
But I have to ask, why would you want to reorder your tracks? And track naming…. this could get confusing. Simple V1, V2, V3, A1, A2, etc. seems to be the best solution for everyone.
As for the DVE…. Its called Motion 3D. Slomo uses part of Shake optical flow technology for smoother slomo, according to Apple.
Just take a real close look at Apple’s website about FCS2, I’m sure you’ll be as excited as I am about this update – its a MAJOR improvement!

It’s been done to death by lots of people. If you are going to NAB, look up Douglas Spotted Eagle. He’s an expert on this technique and even has published a book on HDV and the book includes a chapter on this subject.
