In my slideshows I start with a 4sec length and a 1 sec disolve transition. If the photos contain more than two people, I increase the duration and zoom in and pan so you can recognize the people in the photo.

Checkout this free webinar recording that Sony provided for some inspiration.

  • The webinar was a Sony live one and will show up within a couple weeks within the archive found at the link below:

From the SVP 12 help file below you can see the different methods to invoke this mode. You should be able to define a custom keyboard mapping to assign another more convenient key since you don’t have the keypad.

    Expanded Edit Mode
Expanded edit mode takes the best of edge-trimming and A/B-roll editing to provide a fast, accurate method of trimming events.

    ——————————
Select the event you want to edit.

Perform any of the following actions to enter expanded edit mode:

Choose Edit > Select > Enter Expanded Edit Mode.

Press 5 on the numeric keypad.

    Double-click the event edge.

  • I learned on the Sony Intro to Vegas Pro 12 webinar that this is the new expanded edit mode where you get a spit preview window to assist with aligning events from two camera angles. The 5 key on the numeric keypad will also toggle this mode on and off.

I had seen this before in version 11 and it appears in version 12 too. Try rotating the the frame just slightly 0.1 degrees and the border to snap to the frame as it should. Originally we reported this where it worked if you flip the picture horizontally in Pan Crop.

It worked just fine for me.

Maybe you could check this registry key as shown in the image to see if that is the cause. Mine was still referring to SVP 11.

You can select one of the clips and right click and choose “Select in Project Media list” Now right click that media and choose “Media FX…” This will apply the FX to the media that you split into multiple events on the timeline. If you do not want to do the whole media file, then I have seen some people create another track and just move the events to the other track where you apply a track FX.

There is also an option to paste event attributes to multiple events from one source event.

I seem to recall others finding this related to the version of QuickTime installed. The codecs are installed within Windows (buried in the registry settings), so installing or uninstalling other applications that have codecs impact all of Windows and not just Sony Vegas. Earlier in the year, Sony Vegas Pro 8, 10, and 11 stopped playing my m2ts files. After days of searching the forums and running some utilities, I learned that it was because I uninstalled Adobe Photoshop Elements (not even the version with Premier). Adobe had installed a codec to view my m2ts files and it was marked as the “best” codec to use. The uninstaller for Adobe did not remove itself from the list, but did remove the supporting dll files for the codec. This is why you see people recommending a fresh install of Windows and installing only what you use for software, since it can be very time consuming to find the actual problem. In your case it seems to be narrowed down to mov files and that points to applications that have installed codecs to process mov files.

The utilities I used at the time were GraphStudio and CodecTweakTool.

It stripped out the backslashes on your post too.

Here is a screenshot of regedit. The backslashes in my post were removed and made it hard to understand.

Your value for the default is probably vegas110 and you need to change it to vegas120 to get it to launch with Vegas Pro 12

[Joost Zeeveneegelbeek] “Also strange that when opening the project (consisting of just one track of stereo video and audio)the counter at the bottom instanteniously says 26% and stays there for over a minute before the track is visible on the timeline. Project properties seem okay.”

I might suspect power saving features as it spins up drives where the media for the project is located. My external USB drive always seems to be asleep since I only occasionally access it.

Have you gone through some of the basic optimizations for setting up Vegas Pro yet? Typically turn off system sounds and power management features, place media on a drive other than the OS drive, etc.

Also keep an eye on Vegas with Task Manager as you are troubleshooting. From the View menu of Task manager you can add GDI Objects. There is a limit per process, so if you start getting above 5,000 it might be a good time to save and relaunch Vegas again. Check it before a render.

As for the preview issues, it is most likely the video driver. Try turning off the Windows 7 Aero (eye candy) features and see if turning off the GPU feature in Vegas reduces the problems you are having. That is not a fix, just a way to narrow where the problem may be.
