I don’t know what I’m doing while editing to cause Sony Vegas 12 to split my video track into and A and B level and with some sort of a mid section between the divided tracks, but it’s very disturbing and a show stopper. It’s happened a few times for me and each time I have gone online to look to see what it is that I’m doing to cause this and how to “undo” but I haven’t found anything specific to my problem. So, to work around, I have had to close the project and reopen it to get things back to my normal. In this case, however, I saved my work before the close and the track is till divided into two. Undo doesn’t work. I’m at the end of my wits with this damn thing. Anything you can offer is appreciated.

I stumbled across a way to get rid of the split video track by un-expanding (deselecting) the expanded clip. I don’t know how it got expanded in my case but it did. You have to select the track (not the track or clip on the timeline) but the track itself all the way to the left, then deselect “expanded” under the window options.

The most common way people inadvertently get in to A/B roll editing is to double click on the edge of an event (when trying to resize.) Getting out of A/B is just as easy. Double click the edge of an event again.

I learned on the Sony Intro to Vegas Pro 12 webinar that this is the new expanded edit mode where you get a spit preview window to assist with aligning events from two camera angles. The 5 key on the numeric keypad will also toggle this mode on and off.

Thank you for your comment! Can you offer any more info on the webinar? I’d like to follow your steps there. Also, is there another shortcut key to turn the expanded mode on or off since I don’t have a numeric key pad? Maybe I can install a virtual keyboard for this, I’m thinking? I would love to have a toggle switch because I active the expanded mode accidentally on a regular basis and when I double click to go back, Vegas goes into hyperspace with the hour glass showing and eventually crashes. So, now, I’m just having to save my work frequently and reopening the program when this happens, since this seems to be my best option so far.

The webinar was a Sony live one and will show up within a couple weeks within the archive found at the link below:

From the SVP 12 help file below you can see the different methods to invoke this mode. You should be able to define a custom keyboard mapping to assign another more convenient key since you don’t have the keypad.

    Expanded Edit Mode
Expanded edit mode takes the best of edge-trimming and A/B-roll editing to provide a fast, accurate method of trimming events.

    ——————————
Select the event you want to edit.

Perform any of the following actions to enter expanded edit mode:

Choose Edit > Select > Enter Expanded Edit Mode.

Press 5 on the numeric keypad.

    Double-click the event edge.

    Hi Mark:

I tried this to get out of split screen, and now my video FX is not responding to adjustments and my picture is darker.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Best,

    Debbie

Please answer. I’m in a dire situation right now. Please tell me how you move the track to the left as you had said.
